Curran's Goal Gives Saints Win at Clarkson

Sophomore wing Jacob Drewiske and freshman defenseman George Hughes had big nights and senior wing Alex Curran snapped a 3-3 tie with a power play goal with 1:44 to go in regulation, lifting St. Lawrence to a 4-3 win over Clarkson at Cheel Arena Saturday night, giving the Saints three out of four points on the back-to-back weekend set for the North Country rivals.

The Saints went into Saturday's rematch, the 181st between the two teams, with just one win in its last six trips to Potsdam and 0-2-2 against the Knights since a non-league sweep of a home-and-home series last January. The Saints improve to 8-6-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the ECAC while Clarkson is now 4-10-2 overall and 1-5-2 in league play.

"That was a very solid performance for us in a building that has been tough for visiting teams to play in," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "A couple of our younger guys really stepped in with big performances, but I thought it was a good job all the way across the board. That was a great way to end the first half as far as the league is concerned."

The Saints had to kill off a Clarkson power play midway through the third period, and did that with the help of Petizian who earned his fourth career win against Clarkson and second in his last three starts at Cheel. The senior goalie made 11 of his 21 saves in the third period, but just one of them after Curran had put the Saints in front.

Hughes, who had a goal and an assist in the game, started the game winning play when he gunned a shot from the point which Clarkson goalie Paul Karpowich kicked out, but Curran pounced on the rebound at the side of the net and buried the rebound into the unguarded cage for his third of the year at 18:16 for the game winner.

Clarkson opened the scoring in the game with its fourth power play goal of the weekend as Brandon DeFazio stationed himself at the top of the crease and fought off a pair of Saint defenders before steering a pass from Matt Beca past Petizian at 9:51 of the first. The goal came with just three seconds left in the Knights' man advantage.

The Clarkson goal seemed it ignite the Saint offense as SLU responded with a flurry of shots. The Saints tied the game at 15:31 as Drewiske scored his first collegiate goal in a scramble in front of Karpowich following a faceoff in the Clarkson end. Aaron Bogosian and Rick Carden assisted on the first Saint goal. The Saints then took the lead just under two minutes later, scoring on a power play of their own. Junior defenseman Matt Raley made a good play at the blue line to keep Travis Vermeulen's pass in the offensive zone and then slid the puck across the top to freshman defenseman George Hughes who gunned his second of the year into the middle of the net as Karpowich was caught trying to cut the angle.

Clarkson came back in the second period to take a 3-2 lead with a pair of goals exactly nine minutes apart. Defenseman Bryan Rufenach scored the first as he took the puck after a save by Karpowich and went end-to-end, his shot from the top of the circle catching the back of the net off the tip of Petizian's glove. Jake Morley then gave the Knights the lead at 9:09 with his second of the weekend as his shot from the top of the faceoff circle as his shot slipped between Petizian's pads and into the net.

Drewiske tied it again for the Saints as he took a quick pass from Carden and took a hard wrist shot which beat Karpowich under the crossbar at 13:30 with freshman defenseman Matt Dyer picking up his first career point with the second assist on the goal.
