Saints Settle for Tie with Clarkson

Clarkson sophomore center Corey Tamblyn outraced a St. Lawrence defender to the puck and scored the game-tying goal with 30 seconds to go in regulation time, helping Clarkson overcome a two goal deficit in the third period and tie the Saints 3-3 in ECAC Division I Hockey at Appleton Arena Friday night.

Clarkson stunned the standing room only crowd as the Knights scored two goals in the final 8:13 of the game to forge the tie, getting the tying goal on a power play with the goaltender pulled for a six-on-four man advantage. Clarkson will take a 4-9-2 overall mark and a 1-4-2 league record into Saturday's rematch between the two teams in Potsdam. The Saints are now 7-6-2 overall and 3-3-1 in league play.

The Saints stayed unbeaten in the last five meetings between the two teams in Canton, but the tie was the second straight 3-3 deadlock between the teams at Appleton Arena. SLU is 0-2-1 in its last three after winning two straight and will be out to win at Potsdam for just the fifth time in the last 11 games when the teams play the rematch on Saturday.

"You have to feel we let a point get away there," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "Both teams played hard, but Clarkson was able to take advantage of its power plays and that was the difference between a win and the tie for us. We have been having a tough time on the penalty kill lately, and while the guys worked hard when we were a man down tonight, power play goals hurt us again."

The Saints grabbed the early lead when Aaron Bogosian tipped a fluttering shot from the point by defenseman Derek Keller past Clarkson goalie Paul Karpowich just 1:40 into the game, but the Knights came back to tie the game just 26 seconds into their second power play chance of the night. Sophomore defenseman Mark Borowiecki scored his sixth of the season on a shot along the ice from the top of the faceoff circle which slid between the pads of Saint goalie Robby Moss at 9:43 of the first period.

The Saints outshot Clarkson 10-1 in the second period and took a 2-1 lead at 6:02 as sophomore defenseman Pete Child scored on a power play shot from the center point as the puck bounced in front of Karpowich and hit the back of the net. Karpowich kept it a one-goal game with two great saves on Saint senior Mike McKenzie from point blank range with just over two minutes to play in the period while Moss stopped the only shot on goal by the Knights which came in the first three minutes of the period.

St. Lawrence made it a 3-1 lead 3:59 into the third period when Travis Vermeulen tipped a shot from the point by freshman defenseman George Hughes past Karpowich, but the Knights battled back.

Sophomore Jake Morley scored his second goal of the season from right in front on a power play at 11:47 of the third to make it a 3-2 game and just after the Saints missed an empty net with the puck skimming past off the outside of the post, Tamblyn outraced a Saint defender to the puck after a faceoff just outside the Saint blue line and skated in on Moss, stuffing the tying goal between his pads with 30 seconds left for his second of the year.

The Saints had the only shot on goal in the overtime and finished with a 35-17 edge in shots for the game. Karpowich finished the game with 32 saves for the Knights while Moss had 14 saves for the Saints.
