Bears Stymie Tigers

PROVIDENCE -- Brown's Mike Clemente made 36 saves to help his team to a 3-1 win over the Princeton men's hockey team on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.

Brown built a 2-0 lead with goals in each of the first two periods, then held off a strong Tiger offensive to begin the third period. Princeton was able to get within a goal when senior Cam MacIntyre got his fourth goal of the season, but Brown held off Princeton from there, adding a late goal for insurance in the 3-1 win.

Brown jumped on the scoreboard with four minutes left in the first period when Jordan Pietrus scored from Chris Zaires. The Bears extended their lead midway through the second period when Jack Maclellan scored the eventual game winner, converting on a delayed Princeton penalty.

Princeton held a 21-19 shots edge after two periods and opened the third period putting the puck of the net, outshooting Brown 13-2 in the first seven minutes of the final stanza, eventually cracking Clemente at the 7:05 mark with MacIntyre's tally. Senior Dan Bartlett won an offensive zone faceoff back to senior Brad Schroeder, who got the puck to MacIntyre for the goal, which came on the team's 31st shot of the game. His goal came minutes after a Tiger goal was waved off after a ruling that a shot from junior Matt Arhontas had been kicked in.

Getting within a goal would be as close as Princeton would get though as Brown picked up its play following the Tiger goal and pressured the Tigers end, limiting the Tigers to just three shots in the ensuing 13 minutes, while generating nine shots on goal of its own.

Aaron Volpatti converted on one of those shots, scoring with four minutes remaining to give the Bears a cushion in the closing minutes of the game.

Princeton outshot Brown 37-30. Clemente made 36 saves while Princeton senior goaltender Zane Kalemba stopped 27 shots.

The Tigers dropped to 3-6-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the ECAC, while Brown is now 3-7-1 overall and 2-4-1 in league play. Brown's win snapped an eight-game losing streak at the hands of the Tigers. Princeton concludes the weekend on Saturday afternoon at Brown.
