Greening and Gallagher Combine to Lift Big Red
TROY, N.Y. -- Colin Greening scored the game-winner and added an
assist as the Cornell men's hockey team scored a 2-1 victory over
Rensselaer on Friday night at the Houston Field House in Troy, N.Y.
Blake Gallagher also added a goal and an assist for the Big Red in
the victory, as Cornell improves to 7-2-1 overall and 6-2 in ECAC
Hockey action.
Sean Whitney and Joe Devin chipped in assists for the Big Red,
while Ben Scrivens stopped 22 shots for his seventh victory of the
year. For Rensselaer, Tyler Helfrich scored a goal, with Chase
Polacek and Scott Halpern adding assists. RPI netminder Allen York
stopped 17 shots in taking the loss for the Engineers, who fall to
8-7-1 on the year and 3-2 in league play.
Cornell got on the board first with 4:47 to play in the first
period when, on a power play, Sean Whitney sent the puck on net
from the right point. Greening, setting a screen in front, let the
puck through and it was saved by York, but the rebound came right
off to Greening, who sent it to the back side post to Gallagher,
who flipped it up off the goal post and into the net for the early
lead.
Rensselaer tied the score just under five minutes into the second
period when Chase Polacek carried the puck into the Cornell end
along the boards to Scrivens' left. Polacek reached the bottom of
the faceoff circle and sent a pass in between the circles for Tyler
Helfrich, who ripped a low shot that skipped underneath the
outstretched right leg of the senior netminder, knotting the score
at one.
Cornell went back ahead when Cornell caught Rensselaer cheating up
too far. With the Engineers pinching up on a rush into the Cornell
end, Greening back-checked and won the puck away from Alex
Angers-Goulet and sent it out to the blue line for Gallagher.
Gallagher then sent it up to Devin, and Devin, who carried the puck
across the blue line and slipping a pass to Greening. Greening
skated in and fired a shot from the top of the faceoff circle to
York's right that beat the sophomore high to his glove side for the
2-1 lead.
In the third, Rensselaer had several close calls at scoring the
tying goal, including one with freshman Brandon Pirri alone on the
weak side post, but the freshman's attempt went behind Scrivens and
across the crease before settling into the corner. Rensselaer
pulled York for the extra skater with 55 seconds to play, but the
Engineers could not get the tying goal as Cornell held on for the
victory.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday night when it travels to
Union for a 7 p.m. game in Schenectady, N.Y. Saturday's game will
be televised in Albany on Time Warner Sports, while the game can
also be seen by viewers in Central New York who have digital cable
on channel 1026.
