Garnet Wins Dutchmen Intrasquad Game

SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College men's ice hockey team hit the ice for its annual Garnet and White game, marking the beginning of the 2009-10 season. The Garnet team claimed a 4-1 victory. Union welcomed two special guests behind the bench as Dave Kopecki and Jerry Patrick served as guest coaches for contest.

The teams battled for three, seven minute periods and concluded with a five-man shootout.

Junior Justin Pallos scored White's lone goal during regulation with a choppy goal at 3:42. Senior Jeff Christiansen and sophomore Brian Yanovitch picked up the assists.

With only three minutes remaining in the third, senior Mario Valery-Trabucco cashed in on a rebound off a shot by sophomore Luke Cain.

In the shootout session, the Garnet team got tallies from Cain, junior Adam Presizniuk and Valery-Trabucco.

Goaltending stole the show early when Garnet goaltender, junior Corey Milan, robbed senior Jason Shaffer on the door step, flashing the leather in the first period. For the white team, freshman Keith Kinkaid stopped Presizniuk on a semi-breakaway. Presizniuk, the Dutchmen's leading scorer last year (38 points), tried to slide a one-handed backhand around the freshman netminder.

Senior goaltender Rich Sillery, who split time with Milan, stoned freshman Kyle Bodie in the slot midway through the third frame.
