Weekend Update: Saints and Bulldogs Score Big Home Wins
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The benefits of playing at home
are significant, but that importance takes on greater meaning as
the season winds down. Four of six league results saw the
home teams come out on top last evening.
At St. Lawrence 8, No.4/4 Cornell 1: Senior
defenseman Jared Ross scored two goals as St. Lawrence enjoyed its
biggest offensive night in over a year, shocking fourth ranked
Cornell 8-1 in an ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena in Canton
Friday night. The Big Red entered the game atop the league
standings and as the best team in the nation defensively, but the
Saints outshot Cornell 29-13 through two periods, built a 4-0 lead
and went on to become just the third team this season to score more
than four goals against Cornell. The victory marked the fifth
win for the Saints over a ranked team this season. Junior
Alex Petizian finished with 34 saves for the Saints, 21 of them in
the third period while junior Ben Scrivens and freshman Michael
Garman combined for 31 stops. The Saints finished 1-for-10 on
the power play, while Cornell was 0-for-5.
At No. 20 Dartmouth 5, Rensselaer 2: The Big
Green used goals by junior forward Joe Gaudet, senior foward Connor
Shields and sophomore forwards Scott Fleming, Adam Estoclet and
Kyle Reeds which all helped secure the victory as Dartmouth moves
into third place in the league standings. The Big Green
outshot the Engineers by a count of 30-29. Forwards sophomore
Chase Polacek and senior Seth Klerer netted the goals for
Rensselaer. Freshman netminder Jody O'Neill finished with 27
saves for Dartmouth, while senior Mathias Lange had 25 stops for
Rensselaer.
At No. 18 Yale 3, No. 9/9 Princeton 1: In
front of a sellout crowd of 3,500 at the ‘Whale,' junior
forward Sean Backman had two goals and one assist and senior
netminder Alec Richards stopped 32 of 33 shots as the No. 18 Yale
knocked off No. 9 Princeton in league action. The Bulldogs
outshot the Tigers 42-33 in the action packed contest. Junior
forward Mark Arcobello's goal late in the second period lifted Yale
to a 2-1 lead and proved to be the game-winner. Senior
forward Brett Wilson scored the lone goals for the Tigers.
Yale outshot Princeton 42-33. Junior goaltender Zane Kalemba made a
career-high 39 saves in the loss, while Richards' 32 stops were a
season-high. Yale finished 2-of-5 on the power play, while
the Tigers went 0-for-6 with the extra attacker.
Colgate 3 at Clarkson 1: Sophomore forward
Brian Day posted his third multi-goal game of the year and freshman
forward Matt Firman tallied his first collegiate goal as visiting
Colgate snapped a five game winless skid downing Clarkson 3-1 in an
ECAC Hockey men's clash, Friday evening at Cheel Arena.
Clarkson, which fell for the first time in five games, tied the
game on a power play goal in the second as senior forward Chris
D'Alvise fired a shot past junior goaltender Charles Long.
Clarkson outshot Colgate 27-24 in the game. Long turned aside
26 of 27 shots en route to gaining the win. Freshman Richie
LaVeau stopped 21 Raiders' shots in the loss. The Raiders
went 2-of-6 on the power play, while the Golden Knights connected
on 1-of-3 man advantages.
Quinnipiac 5 at Brown 1: Senior forward
Bryan Leitch, the nation's assists and points leader, had three
assists to help Quinnipiac to a 5-1 win against Brown in an ECAC
Hockey match-up at Meehan Auditorium. The Bobcats erupted for
four second period goals, including a shorthanded game-winning
goals by junior forward Mike Atkinson. Four of the five
Bobcats' goals came by way of the special teams variety - two power
play and two shorthanded. Junior forward Jordan Pietrus
scored the lone goal for the Bears in the first period on a power
play. The Bobcats held the shot advantage in the contest by a
34-20 margin.
At Harvard 3, Union 1: Junior forward Doug
Rogers notched a goal and an assist and freshman Matt Hoyle made 29
saves to lead Harvard to a 3-1 win in over Union at Bright Hockey
Center. Junior defenseman Alex Biega picked-up two assists
for the Crimson. Senior forward Matt Cook scored the lone
goal for the Dutchmen, who got 22 saves from sophomore goaltender
Corey Milan. Union held a 30-25 edge in shots and each team
was 1-for-6 on the power play.
