Weekend Update: Offenses Surge
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Scoring in ECAC Hockey play came in bunches last
evening as contests were highlighted by key offensive
outputs. Home-ice proved to be a benefit as well last night
with four-of-six games being won by ECAC Hockey home
teams.
At No. 13/13 Cornell 4, Clarkson 1: Senior
forward Tyler Mugford had a pair of assists in his return from
injury Friday night as the Big Red picked up a 4-1 win over
Clarkson at Lynah Rink. Cornell improves to 6-1-2 on the year
and 5-0-2 in ECAC Hockey, while Clarkson falls to 2-8-3 on the year
and 1-6-0 in league action. Sophomore defenseman Mike Devin
netted a goal and an assist for the Big Red, while sophomore
forward Dan Nicholls scored the game-winner. Cornell finished
the game one-for-four on the power play while holding Clarkson
scoreless in its four attempts and just two shots with the man
advantage. Junior netminder Ben Scrivens made 13 saves for
the victory, while freshman Paul Karpowich stopped 14 shots in
taking the loss for the Golden Knights.
At Brown 5, Union 4: Junior captain Devin
Timberlake scored two goals and assisted a third to lead a trio of
Bears, all with three points, as the Brown men's ice hockey team
earning a 5-4 over Union Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
Senior forwards Ryan Garbutt and Matt Vokes each netted a goal and
added two assists in the victory for the Bears. Freshman
forward Kelly Zajac registered a career-high four points (1G-3A)
for the Dutchmen. Brown's junior netminder Dan Rosen finished
with 37 saves, including 13 in both the first and third periods,
while sophomore Corey Milan finished the night with 18 stops for
Union. The Dutchmen were two for three on the power play,
while the Bears went three for six with the man-advantage.
At Yale 7, Rensselaer 3: The Bulldogs erased
a two-goal deficit with six straight goals on the way to a 7-3 win
over Rensselaer before 2,644 at Ingalls Rink in an ECAC Hockey
game. Junior forward Mark Arcobello and freshman defenseman
Kevin Peel had two goals each, while sophomore forward Broc Little
had a goal and two assists as the Bulldogs, who outshot the
Engineers 41 to 27, won for the third straight time and the fifth
in the last six games. The Engineers jumped out to a 3-1
first period lead after freshman forward Patrick Cullen netted two
goals in the span of two minutes. Senior goalie Alec Richards
earned the win in net with 24 saves. He did not allow an RPI
goal after giving up a third tally late in the first period and had
13 saves in the final frame. Senior goaltender Mathias Lange
finished with 28 stops through 43 minutes of action for the
Engineers. Both goalies gave up a pair of power-play
goals.
St. Lawrence 5 at Colgate 2: St. Lawrence
had its most productive period of the season with a four-goal
second period and skated to a 5-2 ECAC Hockey victory over Colgate
in Hamilton Friday night. Senior forward Casey Parenteau
scored two goals and the Saints came away with their first regular
season victory at Colgate's Starr Rink since 2001. St.
Lawrence outshot Colgate 37-17 with junior goaltender Alex Petizian
making 15 saves. Both Colgate goals came on the power
play. Freshman netminder Alex Evin turned aside a career-high
32 saves, including 17 in the second period, in the loss for
Colgate.
At Quinnipiac 5, Providence 2: Senior
forward David Marshall scored a goal and added two assists as
Quinnipiac defeated Providence, 5-2, Friday night at the TD
Banknorth Sports Center. Marshall moved closer to joining
senior forward Bryan Leitch as the only current members of the
Bobcats in the 100-point club with his three points in the
game. He now has 96 career points on 58 goals and 38 assists.
The Bobcats benefited from a three-goal outburst in the first
period. The game marked the first time that Quinnipiac had
ever hosted a team from Hockey East.
North Dakota 10 at Harvard 1: North Dakota
scored four goals in each of the last two periods to pull away to a
10-1 defeat of the Harvard men's hockey team Friday night at Bright
Hockey Center, handing the Crimson its first home loss of the
season. North Dakota finished four for nine on the power
play, while the Crimson went zero for five. The Crimson
posted 40 shots on goal, while North Dakota had 37 on
net.
