Saints Complete Weekend Sweep with Win Over Colgate

Boxscore

CANTON, NY - Senior defenseman Matt Generous scored two goals and assisted on a third and junior goaltender Alex Petizian ran his unbeaten streak to five straight games with a 14-save night as St. Lawrence University swept its ECAC Hockey home weekend with a 4-2 win over Colgate at Appleton Arena Saturday night.

The Saints, 8-1 winners over fourth-ranked Cornell on Saturday, improved to 14-10-2 overall and pulled even at 6-6-2 with their first four-point weekend in league play thus far this season. Colgate dropped to 7-14-5 overall and 2-9-3 in league play.

I thought we put in a very solid effort from start to finish tonight," said Saint assistant coach Bob Prier who ran the team along with assistant Mike Hurlbut while head coach Joe Marsh attended a family wedding out of the area.

"We did a good job of getting our sticks on passes and blocking shots and were able to limit their chances when the game was five-on-five. Alex did another excellent job in goal and our defensemen had a great weekend both in their own end and contributing on the offensive end. It was just the kind of weekend we were looking for at home," Prier added.

Shots on goal were at a premium through the first 15 minutes of the game and three of the first four shots on net were goals as the Saints answered an early Colgate power play goal with a pair of goals just 42 seconds apart.

Colgate scored on its first shot on goal in the game as sophomore wing Brian Day scored his 13th of the season on a blast from the faceoff dot which went just under the crossbar and over the shoulder of Saint goalie Alex Petizian. The power play goal snapped a string of 26 consecutive penalty kills for the Saints and gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead at 3:31.

Generous tied the game with a one-timer from the top of the faceoff circle after taking a feed from Jeremiah Cunningham at 11:28 of the first and then Generous set up junior Mike McKenzie for the go-ahead goal at 12:10. Generous pinched in from the point and made a goal-mouth pass for a tap-in for McKenzie's 11th of the year.

Generous scored his second of the night and seventh of the year with 38.1 seconds to play in the second period as he fired a power play shot from the center point which banked into the net off the post. Junior Jeff Caister and sophomore Aaron Bogosian assisted on the play which gave the Saints a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Senior defenseman Shawn Fensel scored a power play goal 4:41 into the third period, the sixth goal of the weekend by a Saint defenseman, to make it a 4-1 game and while  senior defensemen Nick St. Pierre scored a power play goal for the Raiders at 7:50 of the third, Petizian prevented further scoring as the Saints improved to 7-1-1 in their last nine games.

Colgate starter Alex Evin made 20 saves before Brian Bessette came on in relief and added another eight as the Saints had a 32-16 edge in shots on goal.

The Saints had to juggle centers nearly the entire game as senior Casey Parenteau was lost for the night on the first shift of the game. Parenteau was tripped and sustained a leg injury and did not return to the game.

"It impacted our chemistry a little bit early in the first period because Casey is a huge part of our first line and our power play," said Prier. "The other centers settled in after that and we were able to get some flow going again. We just hope that Casey won't be out a long time."
