Tigers Breeze Past Bears
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Mark
Magnowski had two goals and an assist to lead the ninth-ranked
Princeton men's hockey team to a 5-1 win at Brown on Saturday
afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. It was the second time this season
Magnowski has recorded three points in a win at Brown.
Princeton jumped all over Brown in the opening period and wasted
little time setting the tone in the game as Princeton registered
the first 12 shots of the game and had a 2-0 lead before Brown was
able to muster a shot on goal.
Sophomore Mike
Kramer gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with his third goal of the season
at 4:11 of the period. Freshman Brodie
Zuk intercepted a Brown clearing attempt at the blueline and the
fed Kramer low, who beat Brown netminder Michael Clemente through
the five-hole, to put the Tigers ahead for good. The assist was the
first point of Zuk's collegiate career.
Junior Jody
Pederson made it a 2-0 game when he connected on a point-blast at
10:22 on the power play. Skating with a two-man advantage, junior
Kevin
Kaiser won an offensive zone face-off back to Pederson, who trading
the puck with classmate Cam
Ritchie before taking a blast that beat Clemente. In between the
Tiger goals, Kaiser had a great chance of his own, ringing a shot
off the cross bar.
The Tigers continued to control things in the second period and
converted for their second power-play goal at 2:21. Magnowski led
sophomore Matt
Arhontas into the zone with a pass and Arhontas managed a
backhanded shot. It was an easy stop for Clemente, but the rebound
bounced in front and junior Tyler
Beachell pounced on the rebound for his second goal of the
year.
Princeton then stretched its lead to four goals at 11:57 when
Magnowski scored his eighth goal of the year. He and Arhontas
worked down low as a penalty expired and just after the kill ended,
Arhontas fed Magnowski in front of the net where he beat Clemente
high on the shot side.
Brown got on the scoreboard at 2:30 of the third period when Bobby
Farnham scored on a one-timer, but Magnowski finished off the game
with a goal 12:46 as he slid home the rebound of a Pederson point
shot for the Tigers fifth goal and his team-leading ninth of the
year.
Princeton junior goaltender Zane
Kalemba made 24 saves for the win while Clemente made 42 in the
loss. Princeton outshot Brown 47-25.
Princeton improved to 15-6 overall and 9-5 in the ECAC with the
win. The Tigers visit Colgate next Friday night at 7 p.m.
