Saints Shock No. 4 Cornell
Canton, NY - Senior defenseman Jared Ross scored two goals and St. Lawrence University enjoyed its biggest offensive night in over a year, shocking fourth ranked Cornell 8-1 in an ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena in Canton Friday night.
Cornell entered the game atop the ECAC standings and as the best
team in the nation defensively, but the Saints outshot the Big Red
29-13 through two periods, built a 4-0 lead and went on to become
just the third team this season to score more than four goals
against Cornell.
SLU improves to 13-10-2 overall and 5-6-2 in the ECAC while Cornell
is now 14-3-3 overall and 9-2-2 in league play. It was the
fifth win for the Saints over a ranked team and by far the biggest,
both in terms of margin of victory and impact as far as the league
race is concerned.
"I thought we could give them a game based on how well we played in
Ithaca earlier this year," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "But, I
certainly didn't expect anything like this. Our guys were clicking
on all cylinders and we caught a couple of breaks and then things
snowballed. It is obviously a huge win for us and one we can take a
lot of momentum out of, but we are going to have to put it behind
us quickly and get ready for Colgate on Saturday."
The Saints wasted little time in hitting the scoreboard as
freshman wing Brandon Bollig scored his fourth goal of the season
just 1:12 into the game. Travis Vermeulen and Alex Curran
double-teamed a Cornell defender at the blue line and knocked the
puck free. Bollig picked it up and fired a shot from the top of the
faceoff circle which beat Cornell goalie Ben Scrivens just inside
the post to the upper corner.
Both goaltenders made some big saves in what was an even first
period and the Saints took a 2-0 lead with 1:33 to go in the first
when senior defenseman Jared Ross took a shot from the point which
knuckled and dipped, bouncing past Scrivens on a short hop for
Ross' second goal of the season.
The Saints cashed in on a pair of second period power plays and
chased Scrivens, the nation's top goalie statistically from the
game. Kevin DeVergilio made it a 3-0 game with his sixth of the
season as he tipped a shot from the center point by junior
defenseman Jeff Caister at 2:47 and defenseman Zach Miskovic scored
his tenth of the season as he crashed the net from the point on the
power play and stuck a shot under the crossbar off a pass by Casey
Parenteau at 9:21. Freshman Mike Garman came on in relief of
Scrivens and was solid the rest of the period, making six saves in
the final 10:39 of the second.
Cornell made a bid to get back into it just 27 seconds into the
third period when sophomore Riley Nash scored his ninth of the year
on a tuck-in, but the Saints put it away with four more third
period goals. It was the fifth career goal in four career games
against the Saints for the Cornell sophomore.
Bollig set up Travis Vermeulen who cruised down the slot and put
his fifth of the year past Garman at 5:12 of the third and when
Cornell coach Mike Schafer tried to jump start his club by pulling
Garman for an extra attacker, Saint defenseman Derek Keller scored
his second of the season into the empty net at 7:35.
Ross scored his second of the night on a power play at 8:38 and
rookie Jake Klancher scored his first collegiate goal from point
blank range with 13:21 to go as the Saints closed out the
impressive victory.
Petizian finished with 34 saves for the Saints, 21 of them in the
third period while Scrivens and Garman combined for 31 stops.
"Alex was solid again and made a couple of big saves when it looked
like they were going to try to get a little run going and get back
into it," said Marsh.
Cornell lost its third straight at Appleton Arena and has not won
in Canton since 2005. The Saints improved to 6-1-1 in their last
eight.
