Pederson, Kalemba Lead Tigers to Shutout Against Yale
PRINCETON -- Junior Jody
Pederson's third-period power-play goal proved to be enough as the
10th-ranked Princeton men's hockey team skated to a 2-0 shutout win
over seventh-ranked Yale on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink. The
win was Princeton's 20th of the season and moved Princeton within
two points of first-pace Yale entering the final weekend of the
regular season.
Neither team scored until the final period but there were excellent
chances at both ends throughout the night. Princeton nearly went
ahead midway through the second when Yale netminder Alec Richards
stuffed senior Lee
Jubinville on the doorstep and then sophomore Mike
Kramer's rebound attempt went through Richards but squeaked wide of
the goal.
Yale nearly went ahead late in the period when Brian O'Neill was
robbed by Princeotn junior goaltender Zane
Kalemba on a one-time shot from the right side. O'Neill's shot was
targeted for the top of the net, but Kalemba's glove kept the game
scoreless.
Princeton came out strong for the third period and put a lot of
rubber on Richards, taking 11 of the first 14 shots of the period.
In that span, Pederson scored his fourth of the year through a
screen to give Princeton the lead. With Kevin Limbert serving an
interference penalty, the Tigers gained possession in the offensive
zone. Senior Brett
Wilson got the puck to sophomore Taylor
Fedun on the right point and Fedun slid it across the blueline for
Pederson, who one-timed the pass through Richards for the go-ahead
goal. The goal came at 5:34 of the period.
Yale responded to the goal and put a lot of pressure on the
Princeton end over the remainder of the period, but could not crack
Kalemba, who made 11 of his 31 saves in the final period. The
shutout was his second of the year and seventh of his career.
Princeton outshot Yale 35-31. Richards made 33 saves.
Princeton improved to 20-7 overall and 14-6 in the ECAC, while Yale
dropped to 19-6-2 overall and 14-4-2 in the league. Yale still
holds a two-point lead atop the ECAC standings. Princeton also
clinched a first-round playoff bye with the win and will host an
ECAC quarterfinal series the weekend of March 13-15.
Princeton is back in action next Friday at Dartmouth.
