Saints, Harvard Skate to Draw

Boxscore

Harvard junior center Doug Rogers tied the game 2:49 into the third period and it stayed that way the rest of the way as Harvard and St. Lawrence skated to a 2-2 tie in an ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena Friday night.

St. Lawrence, battling for a possible first-round playoff bye picked up one point on fourth place Dartmouth and holds a one point lead on Harvard and Quinnipiac which are tied for six with three games left in the regular season. The Saints, now 16-11-4 overall and 8-7-4 in league play will host Dartmouth on Saturday night. Harvard is now 7-14-5 overall and 7-7-5 in league play.

"That was a very good hockey game," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "I thought both teams played very well and both teams had their chances to win it. Alex helped us out with some big saves on the five-on-three penalty kill and Carroll made some big saves for Harvard when we were getting a little momentum going."

Goaltenders Ryan Carroll of Harvard and Alex Petizian of the Saints both came up big in the fast-paced end-to-end game with Petizian making a number of big saves on a five-on-three Harvard power play at the end of the second period to keep the Saints in front 2-1 at that point in the game.

Rogers opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season at 12:58 of the first period as Eric Kroshus deflected a pass to Rogers in the short slot and Rogers gunned a shot just under the crossbar. The Saints came back to tie it when senior wing Kevin DeVergilio came through with a spectacular play on a penalty kill. DeVergilio reached  in and stole the puck from a Harvard player, used the player as a partial screen and snapped a wrist shot past Carroll for his eighth of the season at 17:58 to tie the game at 1-1 after one.

"DeVo made a number of big plays in the game, but none bigger than that one," said Marsh. "He has tremendous hands and great stick skills and they were all on display on that play."

The Saints went in front 2-1 with 2:48 to go in period two as Jeremiah Cunningham sent Max Mobley in on Carroll and while the Crimson goalie was able to kick out Mobley's shot, Cunningham pounced on the rebound and put it into the corner of the cage for his second of the year.

Rogers tied the game at 2:49 of the third on a near carbon-copy of his first goal, popping the puck just under the crossbar from Michael Biega to tie the game at 2-2.

St. Lawrence pressured Harvard in the third period and had six shots on a pair of power plays, but Carroll kept the Saints at bay and is now 2-0-1 in his last three starts. The Crimson goalie finished with 37 saves while Petizian is now 6-1-2 in  his last nine starts after a 27 save night.
