Final Period Outburst Gives No. 8 Big Green Thrilling Tie with Clarkson
HANOVER, N.H. - Down by four goals entering the final period, the eighth-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team stormed back with four goals of its own to earn the 4-4 tie with Clarkson, clinching home ice for the Big Green in the first round of the ECAC Hockey Tournament.
For Dartmouth (16-7-4, 13-4-4 ECAC Hockey), freshman Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.) netted a pair of goals, including the game-tying goal on the power play to lead the Big Green. Junior Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) chipped in with a game-high three points on a goal and two assists.
For Clarkson (16-11-4, 10-7-4 ECAC Hockey), Marie-Jo Gaudet posted two scores, while Juana Baribeau collected a pair of helpers. Gabrielle Kosziwka and Genevieve Lavoie also netted goals for the Golden Knights.
Dartmouth didn't get off to the start it needed as Clarkson went up 1-0 just 32 seconds into the contest. Gaudet was behind the net, found an opening and went around the near post and beat Clemis to give the Golden Knights the earlier lead.
Clarkson added to its lead five minutes later as Lavoie beat Clemis on almost the exact play from Gaudet. She camped behind the net, skated to the near post and scooped a backhand inside the opposite post to increase the lead to 2-0.
The Big Green outshot the Golden Knights 10-8 in the period and had a chance to get back in the game with a power play opportunity. Unfortunately, Dartmouth couldn't find a rhythm on the man advantage, giving Clarkson a couple of shorthanded chances. Luckily for the Big Green and their lack of flow on the power play, the Golden Knights failed to score a man down.
In the second period, Clarkson continued on the offensive and broke open the game with a pair of scores to push the lead up to 4-0.
Gaudet got in the scoring column again with her second of the night coming with nine minutes left in the period. She received a pass from Kimberly McKenney and beat Clemis top shelf on the glove side to give the Golden Knights a 3-0 advantage. Gabrielle Kosziwka gave Clarkson a commanding 4-0 lead with her second of the season with 4:33 left in the frame. Kosziwka took a harmless shot from the point off of the face-off that Clemis never saw and it beat the netminder low and under the glove hand.
Dartmouth was outshot again in the period by a 17-8 advantage and was scoreless in its one power play chance.
The Big Green saved the final period to final get on track with four goals, two coming on the power play to earn the all important one point in the final weekend.
Sophomore Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) got things rolling 1:29 into the period with her team-leading 17th goal of the season. Cunningham got a shot on net that Clarkson netminder Lauren Dahm couldn't handle and Trunzo was there for the rebound to get Dartmouth on the board at 4-1.
It took 8:30 until Dartmouth cut the lead down to 4-2 as Foley netted one of her two on the night. Senior co-captain Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) put a shot on net that Dahm, once again, couldn't handle and Foley swooped in behind Bowman and chipped the puck in the net.
Cunningham put a charge into the Dartmouth crowd with 6:42 remaining in the game with a power play goal to shrink the Clarkson lead to one. Senior co-captain Sarah Newnam (Clifton, Va.) got the puck on net and Cunningham was there for the clean-up to get the Big Green to within one goal.
The game-tying goal came from Foley with 2:32 left in the period. Once again it was Cunningham and fellow freshman Reagan Fischer (Irma, Alta.), who had two tallies on the night, that gave Foley the opportunity to tie the game.
Overtime was eventful for the Big Green as Dartmouth earned six shots, including four in the final minute, but couldn't find a way to get the puck in the net.
Senior goaltender Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) got the start, but was pulled in the second period after giving up four goals and stopping 20 shots. Junior Mariel Lacina (London, Ont.) earned her second career tie with 10 stops in 30 minutes of play. Dahm posted 34 stops in the game to earn her fifth tie of the season.
Dartmouth rebounded to outshot Clarkson 38-34 and the Big Green went 2-for-4 on the man advantage, while the Golden Knights went scoreless in three opportunities.
