NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Kevin Devergilio's goal early in the third period helped the St. Lawrence men's hockey team erase a two-goal deficit on the way to a 2-2 OT tie with Yale before 3,321 at Ingalls Rink in ECAC Hockey play.
The Saints (11-9-2, 3-5-2) matched Yale's speed despite being outshot 38-28 by the home team.
Billy Blase made 26 stops while keeping SLU off the board on six of seven power plays, while Alex Petizian notched first-star honors with 36 saves. The Saints' goalie kept the Blue (11-5-1, 6-3-1) scoreless on six man-advantages.
Kevin Limbert took advantage of a good bounce to give Yale the lead at 15:57 of the first. Jimmy Martin's shot from the point bounced off an SLU defender and came right to the freshman center in the low slot. Limbert controlled and then snapped off a low shot stick side.
Forty-eight seconds later, the Bulldogs hooked up on a pretty long pass to make it 2-0. Ken Trentowski connected with Brian O'Neill on a neutral-zone crossing pass that gave the Eli rookie winger a clear path to the net. O'Neill, with a winger on his right and no defenders in the way, wristed a low shot into the net on the glove side at 15:57.
The Bulldogs couldn't hold on to the two-goal cushion for the intermission. The Saints took advantage of a defensive mistake to score with 29 seconds left. Kevi Devergilio carried over the Yale blueline and two defenders went to him, leaving Casey Parenteau cruising into the left circle alone. SLU made the pass and the wrist shot from Parentau went behind Blase to make it 2-1 in a period that had both teams put nine shots on net.
Both goalies were busy in a scoreless second period. Petizian had 12 saves and Blase made 11.
The visitors cashed in on an early third-period man-advantage, just 14 seconds into the power play, to even things at 3:18. Kevin Devergilio's shot from the left circle hit Blase's pad and trickled over the goal line. The SLU winger took a hard feed from the point and then deked a defender to get an open look at the net.
Yale put more pucks toward Petizian than SLU did on the home netiminder the rest of the way, but nothing was getting by the junior, who had to kill off a penalty for nearly the last two minutes of regulation and then stopped a Matt Nelson shot with 10 seconds left.
Both goalies made a pair of pressure saves with under a minute to play in the OT and finished with two stops.
