Valery-Trabucco Leads Union to Win Against Colgate
SCHENECTADY, NY -- Junior right-winger Mario
Valery-Trabucco scored twice and added an assist in the Union
College men's ice hockey team's 6-3 win against ECAC Hockey foe
Colgate on Saturday night at Messa Rink. The two-goal performance
was the fourth of his career as he extends his scoring streak to a
season-long five games. The Dutchmen improve to 12-9-1 overall and
5-5-0 in the conference, while The Red Raiders go to 6-11-5 and
1-6-3 in ECACH.
In all five Dutchmen had multi-point nights, including senior
left-winger Matt Cook and sophomore center John Simpson with a goal
and an assist each. Senior defenseman Brendan Milnamow, sophomore
left-winger Adam Presizniuk and freshman center Kelly Zajac each
totaled two assists.
Sophomore right-winger Stéphane Boileau and redshirt
freshman left-winger Luke Cain both potted goals.
Presizniuk and junior center Jason Walters, who had an assist, each
extended their scoring streaks to five games.
Sophomore goaltender Corey Milan earned his 12th victory of the
season and 18th of his career by turning away 24 shots. He made
seven saves in the first, nine in the second and eight in the
third. Milan was playing in this 22nd game of the season and
entered with a 2.65 goals-against average and a .907 save
percentage.
Union unloaded 38 shots, eclipsing the 30 shot plateau for the 10th
time this season. They went 2-for-6 on the power play, while
killing 4-of-5. Colgate finished with 27 shots.
Cain netted the game-winner at the 8:44 mark of the third period
after Simpson used his speed to get behind the defense. After
taking the puck wide and behind the net, he found Cain crashing to
the net for a one-timer. The goal was Cain's career-high third of
the season and the first since scoring the game-winner against
Harvard (3-1) on Nov. 8.
Valery-Trabucco snipped Union's fifth goal while on the power play
at 13:22 and Simpson added an empty netter at 19:14.
The scoring started when Boileau put Union up 1-0 only 2:03 into
the game with his third power play goal of the season. After
Milnamow received a pass at the point from Zajac, he threw the puck
towards the goal where Boileau tipped it past junior goaltender
Charles Long.
The Red Raiders responded near the end of the first (15:17) when
junior center David McIntyre scored off a rebound on a shot from
senior David Sloane. The second assist went to senior left-winger
Peter Bogdanich.
Then with 3:45 remaining in the first and only 58 seconds after
Colgate tied it up, Cook sent a backhander into a gapping net.
Zajac won the puck high in the zone and fed Valery-Trabucco in the
slot for a one-timer. The rebound kicked to the right where Cook
sent home his 30th career goal.
Valery-Trabucco made it 3-1 early in the second at 3:56 with a
blistering slap shot at the top of the left circle. Presizniuk and
Walters each had helpers on the goal, which came just as a Colgate
penalty expired.
Milan turned away nine shots in the second period, but junior
right-winger Jason Williams broke through at 17:06 on the power
play. McIntyre setup a tick-tack play between sophomore center
Francois Brisebo and Williams.
McIntyre gained the momentum for his team by tying up the score
(3-3) 5:02 into the third, but the Dutchmen responded only 2:18
later with Cain's goal.
Long finished with 32 saves as his record moves to 5-7-4.

North Country on Friday, Jan. 23 at Clarkson at 7 p.m. They face
