Saints Win Big at Brown
PROVIDENCE, RI -- Junior goaltender Kain Tisi turned in his third straight strong performance and Brock McBride had a goal and two assists as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team walked out of its own little house of horrors in Providence with a 6-1 ECAC Hockey victory over Brown Friday night.
Meehan Auditorium has been a far from friendly place for St. Lawrence teams to play, regardless of the records of the two teams. The Bears, who have won at least one over the Saints in each of the last seven seasons, had a three-game home win streak against the Saints snapped as SLU jumped out to a 3-1 lead through two periods and then put it away with a three-goal third, giving Tisi another big offensive night.
The Saint goaltender, who had had only one goal scored by the Saints while he was in net in his first seven periods this season has now had 11 scored for him in his last two starts, both victories. The Saints improved to 11-9-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the ECAC heading into a Saturday game at Yale.
"That was a big game for us in a place where we typically have not had a lot of success," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "We scored a couple of big goals in the second period to kind of establish control and then put it away in the third in what I thought was a very solid performance on the road.
"Brown has struggled record-wise, but they have played teams tough and have had some success on the power play. I was very pleased with the way we worked on the penalty kill and with our play on the power play as well."
The Saints jumped out to an early lead on a power play as Mike McKenzie was hauled down in the Brown end and made the Bears pay for it as he scored his seventh of the year 1:30 into the man advantage. Kevin DeVergilio fed McKenzie the puck and the Saint junior came out from behind the net and tucked the puck between the post and Dan Rosen's pads at 12:31.
Brown came back to tie it on a penalty shot at 16:10 of the first. Ryan Garbutt was awarded the penalty shot when he got a step on a Saint defender and was hooked as he got a shot off which Saint goalie Kain Tisi saved. Tisi also got a pad on Garbutt's penalty shot, but the puck trickled across the goal line to tie the game at 1-1 in what turned out to be a dead-even first period.
The Saints retook the lead on a power play 8:23 into the second period as Zach Miskovic beat two Brown defenders to the puck along the end boards and sent it out to Jared Ross at the left point. Ross immediately relayed the puck to Brock McBride at the top of the right faceoff circle and McBride rifled a shot just under the crossbar that sent the waterbottle flying for his seventh of the season.
The waterbottle flew even higher just seven seconds after a Saint power play had expired at the 12:54 mark as McBride relayed the puck to Ross and he found Travis Vermeulen just above the right faceoff dot and Vermeulen one-timed the puck over Rosen's shoulder for his fourth of the season and the 3-1 lead.
Matt Generous scored his fifth of the year and second in as many games as he hit the far corner of the net from the faceoff circle as Jacob Drewiske set him up to make it a 4-1 Saint lead 8:39 into the third and then the Saint penalty kill sealed the deal against a Brown power play which ranks among the top ten in the nation.
The Saints killed off a double minor, a full two minute five on three and four straight Brown power plays from the 9:05 mark of the third through the 16 minute mark and allowed Brown a total of four shots on goal in that entire stretch.
The offense kicked back in after the penalty kills as Zach Miskovic scored his seventh of the year off a pass from McBride at 17:58 and Drewiske beat two Brown defenders to the puck behind the goal and fed Jeremiah Cunningham who was crashing the net for Cunningham's first of the year at 18:27.
