Engineers Edge Colgate in Overtime

Boxscore

TROY, N.Y. - Senior captain Seth Klerer's second goal of the game, just forty-two seconds into overtime, propelled the Rensselaer men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the Colgate University at the Houston Field House. With the win the Engineers improve to 5-15-2 and 4-5-1 in ECAC Hockey, while the Raiders fall to 6-10-5 (1-5-3 ECACH).

In a scramble in front of the Colgate net, Klerer beat the sprawling attempt of goaltender Charles Long (Plattsburgh, NY) for the game-winner. Falling down on the play, Klerer was able to push the puck into the corner of the net for the score. Sophomores Chase Polacek (Edina, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) and Tyler Helfrich (Calgary, Alb/Prince George Spruce Kings) assisted on the play.

RPI opened the scoring late in the first period when freshman Alex Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, Que./Langley Chiefs) beat Long on a breakaway at 17:28. Senior Matt Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, Que./Notre Dame Hounds) sent the puck off the boards to classmate Kurt Colling (Ripley, Ont./Vernon Vipers), who chipped it ahead to Alex who finished five-hole.

The Raiders responded quickly, tying the game at one on junior Jason William's (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) power play tally with just under one minute remaining in the period. Senior Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wisc.) dug the puck out from behind the net and passed it to Williams, who ran the give-and-go with classmate David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.). When Williams received the puck again he blasted it over the right shoulder of Engineers' senior goalie Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) for the score.

The Engineers recaptured the lead at 12:11 in the second frame when Klerer fired a shot off the right post and into the back of the net from the low slot. With control of the puck in the left corner, sophomore John Kennedy (Saginaw, Mich./St. Louis Bandits) sent the puck to Helfrich at the top of the left circle who passed it to Klerer, setting him up for his third goal of the season.

Colgate knotted things up 2-2 at 8:47 in the third period on a power-play goal from McIntyre. Senior Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, Que.) found McIntyre at the left circle, and proceeded to slide around an RPI defender and find daylight to Lange's glove side for his tenth goal of the year.

The Engineers return to action tomorrow night when they take on Cornell (7:07pm). Colgate travels to Schenectady to play Union College (7pm).
