Dutchmen Top Bears
SCHENECTADY, NY - Sophomore goaltender Corey Milan turned aside
21 saves and added an assist, helping the Union College men's ice
hockey team to a 2-1 victory against Brown (2-19-4, 2-13-3) on
Friday afternoon at Messa Rink. The Dutchmen (15-13-2, 8-9-1)
earned its 15th victory of the season - a feat that has only been
accomplished three other times in program history.
The Dutchmen killed off two 5-on-3 penalties in the third period.
The first lasted 1:41, while the second went for 1:36. Milan, who
extended his scoring streak to two games, earned his 21st career
victory.
Union's offense was powered by its top two scorers with sophomore
forward Adam Presizniuk and junior forward Jason Walters each
potting goals. Presizniuk's goal was his 13th of the season and
20th of his career. He moves his season point total to 29
points.
Walters scored for the second consecutive game and now has 10 goals
on the season and 24 points. His career marks move to 23 goals and
72 points.
Senior forward Chris Potts wrapped things up with his fourth goal
of the season, an empty netter, with just three ticks
remaining.
Sophomore defender Brock Matheson and sophomore forward
Stéphane Boileau earned assists on Union's first goal, while
senior defenseman Lane Caffaro and Milan picked up helpers on
Walter's tally.
Union's power play converted on one of its two chances, giving it
its seventh power-play goal in five outings. The penalty kill
fought off all eight Brown man advantages. The unit has not allowed
a power-play goal in four outings and has killed 24 straight.
Presizniuk capped a first period, which was mostly dominated by the
home team, with a goal 1:33 before the break with a deflection off
a Matheson shot. Boileau earned the second assist by finding
Matheson at the point.
The Dutchmen outshot the Bears 16-5 in the first and didn't allow a
shot until the 8:34 mark when Brown was on the power play.
Walters made it 2-0 after 19:55 of scoreless hockey in the second
period. The play started with Milan behind his goal and proceeded
to Caffaro and Walters, who banked a shot off a Brown
defenseman.
Brown's goal came at 18:43 of the third with freshman goaltender
Michael Clemente on the bench. Freshman Bobby Farnham connected off
a pass from freshmen Jack MaClellan and Jeff Buvinow.
Clemente finished the game with 41 saves.
Union outshot Brown 44-22, marking the fifth time the Dutchmen have
outshot its opponents by 20 or more shots. Union is 4-1-1 in those
games.
Staring the Dutchmen in the face is its last regular season road
trip, which begins with a 7 p.m. contest at Colgate on Friday, Feb.
20. The team than travels to Cornell for a 7 p.m. start on
Saturday, Feb. 21
