Petizian Backstops Saints to Upset Win Over Princeton
PRINCETON, NJ - University junior goaltender Alex Petizian turned in his best performance of the season on Saturday, as the Kirkland, Quebec native made a season-high 40 saves to anchor the Saints to an impressive 3-1 victory over No. 9 Princeton University at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton, NJ.
The Saints (15-11-3, 7-7-3) earn an important weekend sweep and will retain sole possession of fifth place in the ECAC Hockey standings into their final regular season home games next weekend against Harvard and Dartmouth. Despite outshooting the visitors 41-27, Princeton falls to 18-7-0 (12-6-0) on the season as they were unable to dig out of a two-goal first period deficit.
Though the Tigers came out blazing and built a solid 10-1 advantage on shots on goal in the early in the first period, the Scarlet and Brown were able to weather the storm and take a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes of hockey. First-year student Mark Armstrong gave his team a 1-0 cushion when his shot beat Princeton goaltender Zane Kalemba (18-5-0) between the pads at 8:53. Sophomore Jared Keller set the play up with a beautiful centering pass into the slot.
With Petizian making save after save on the far end of the ice, the St. Lawrence offense went to work again and made it 2-0 at 14:07 of the opening stanza. Sophomore Aaron Bogosian ran a solid 3-on-2 effort off of a face-off at center ice and buried a wrist shot past Kalemba for his third goal of the season, with Keller earning his second assist of the evening.
Princeton's best chance in the period came only moments after their opponents took a 2-0 lead, as Kevin Lohry picked up a pass at the Saints' blue line and skated in on a clean breakaway against Petizian (12-8-3). The goaltender made an outstanding pad save and re-directed the rebound to the far boards to keep his team on top 2-0 after one period despite being outshot 17-7.
The second period was owned by the goaltenders, as both Petizian and Kalemba were able to turn away nearly every scoring bid that came their way. The only goal in the frame came off the stick of Princeton's Lee Jubinville, the reigning ECAC Hockey Player of the Year, at 12:45. With the Tigers skating on their fifth power play try of the afternoon, Jubinville eluded a St. Lawrence defender and lifted a shot over Petizian but under the crossbar for his seventh goal of the year.
The goal set up what would be a highly-contested battle in the third period, with both big hits and saves keeping the crowd of 1,933 on the edge of their seats. Petizian continued to shut down the Princeton offense, but his defense did a fantastic job of clearing all rebounds away from the crease.
As the clock ticked under the one minute mark, Kalemba skated to the Princeton bench in favor of the extra attacker. However, the Tigers turned the puck over in the neutral zone as junior Mike McKenzie stuck his stick out and intercepted a crossing pass. The Whitby, ON native then gathered the puck and flipped it towards the empty goal. The puck bounced once before hitting the right post and crossing the goal line for McKenzie's 13th tally of the season at 19:07 to ensure the Saints' victory at 3-1.
Petizian finished with seven saves in the third period after making 17 and 16 in the first and second, respectively. Kalemba closed with 24 stops including a game-high 12 in the second period. Princeton scored the only power play goal of the game, finishing 1-of-6 with the extra skater while St. Lawrence was 0-for-4.
The Saints, who avenged a 2-1 loss to Princeton earlier this season and improved to 5-6-1 against nationally-ranked foes this season, will look to continue to gain ground in the conference standings when they take on Harvard on Friday, February 20 at Appleton Arena at 7:00pm. The Saints will be donning specially designed jerseys in collaboration with ECAC Hockey's "Pink at the Rink."
