Harvard Dumps No. 6 Cornell

Boxscore

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Sophomore Ryan Carroll made 42 saves and the Harvard men's hockey team scored on its final four power plays to defeat No. 6 Cornell, 4-2, Saturday in front of a raucous, sellout crowd of 3,022 at Bright Hockey Center.

The win was the Crimson's fifth in its last six meetings against the rival Big Red (15-6-4, 10-5-3 ECAC Hockey, 4-4-0 Ivy League) and completed a weekend sweep following Friday's 3-2 win against Colgate. Sophomore Matt McCollem and freshman Daniel Moriarty each registered a goal and an assist for Harvard (7-14-4, 7-7-4, 2-4-3).

Freshman Alex Killorn and senior Nick Coskren also scored, while Doug Rogers, Alex Biega and Chris Huxley logged two assists each. The Crimson matched its season high for power-play goals to overcome two goals by Cornell's Colin Greening and a 44-24 shots advantage for the Big Red. Ben Scrivens made 20 saves.

Despite a first period full of action and featuring two power plays for each side, neither team found the net. Harvard outshot Cornell, 15-14, in the frame. One of the Crimson's best chances came down low on the right side, where sophomore Michael Biega was denied twice in succession by Scrivens.

Cornell had its best sustained pressure on a man advantage in the final minutes of the first. Carroll capped a strong period with an impressive glove save on Evan Barlow's high one-timer through traffic.

Harvard broke through for the game's first score seven minutes into the second period, on the power play. Following passes from Rogers and Alex Biega, Killorn got the puck low on the left. With Scrivens looking for him to pass across, Killorn buried a shot low on the short side.

The Big Red knotted the score at 1-1 less than four minutes later. Colin Greening shot high over Carroll's blocker from in front after Blake Gallagher worked the puck around and Joe Devin passed it out of the left corner.

McCollem put the Crimson back on top with another power-play tally at 14:45. Alex Biega passed the puck ahead to the blue line, where freshman Daniel Moriarty slowed it down for Rogers, who passed to McCollem on the left. The sophomore darted between defenders, moved to his backhand and slipped a shot past Scrivens.

Carroll continued to deny Cornell, preserving the 2-1 margin until the second intermission despite a 16-6 Big Red edge in shots for the period. He made an outstanding save with his right shoulder on an on-rushing Greening, who deflected the puck toward the top corner.

Moriarty built the lead to 3-1 about seven minutes into the final frame. After McCollem worked the puck out of the corner to Huxley on the right boards, Huxley shoved it across to Moriarty for the one-time finish out of the right slot.

Cornell picked up its pressure after that, outshooting Harvard by a 14-3 margin in the period. Almost every time the Big Red got a shot on net, Carroll was there for the stop. His best save of the period may have been a sliding, left-pad stop on Greening, who was waiting alone in front on a power play.

Greening finally trimmed the lead to one goal at 16:30 of the third, putting in the rebound after Blake Gallagher collected the puck at the blue line and threw it at the net.

The Big Red continued to attack, pulling Scrivens for an extra attacker, but Greening committed a penalty with 27.9 seconds left and Coskren had the game's final tally on an empty net. Huxley passed across his zone to Alex Biega, and the junior chipped the puck up the left boards. Coskren won the race to the puck and sent in a soft shot from near the top of the circle for his team-leading eighth goal.

Harvard tries to translate this weekend's momentum into some road points as it travels to St. Lawrence and Clarkson next weekend.
