TROY, N.Y. - Freshman forward Patrick Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice) netted the only goal of the game with just 2:46 remaining in the third period to lead the 11th-seeded Rensselaer men's hockey team to a 1-0 victory over second-seed and 12th-ranked Cornell in ECACH Quarterfinal action, this evening at Lynah Rink.

With the win, the Engineers take Game 1 of the best-of-three series and improve to 10-25-2 on the season. The Big Red falls to 18-8-4 overall.

The Engineers' game-winner came when Cullen took a pass at the left circle from sophomore Tyler Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) and ripped a shot into the top right corner of the net at 17:14 of the final frame. Bryan Brutlag (Lakeville, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) earned the second assist.

RPI Freshman netminder Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) made 32 saves to earn his first career shutout, while Cornell junior goalie Ben Scrivens (Spruce Grove, AB/Spruce Grove Saints) made 13 stops.

In a tightly checked first period controlled by the Big Red, Cornell out-shot the Engineers by a 7-4 margin. The home side was unsuccessful on two man-advantage opportunities, while RPI did not have a power-play in the opening frame.

In the second, the Engineers were able to generate a number of scoring chances in what was a more evenly played period than the first. Cornell still took the shots edge (10-4) in the second frame, but RPI's power play was able to set up and create opportunities of the Big Red cage.

Neither team was able to convert on the man advantage on the evening as the Big Red went 0 for 4 and RPI finished 0 for 3. Cornell finished with a 32-14 edge in shots on goal.
