Saints Earn Overtime Win
HAMDEN, CT - Senior defenseman Jared Ross launched a slap shot from the left point that slipped between Quinnipiac goaltender Bud Fisher's pads 1:06 into overtime as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the Bobcats at the TD Banknorth Center in Hamden, CT on Friday evening.
The victory moves the Saints to 15-11-3 (7-7-3) on the season and into fifth place in the ECAC Hockey standings. It was also the first time this season that the Scarlet and Brown won when trailing after the first period (1-6-1). Meanwhile, Quinnipiac falls to 14-13-2 (7-8-3) despite a solid outing in net by Fisher, who made 29 saves.
"That was a big road win for us," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "Each time Quinnipiac got up on us, we were able to answer. Alex turned in a solid game in goal and for the second year in a row one of our defensemen came up with a big play in this building." Last year it was Shawn Fensel's buzzer-beater goal that enabled the Saints to tie the Bobcats, this year it was Ross' game winner.
The Saints wasted little time in taking a 1-0 lead as senior
Brock McBride scored his 10th goal of the season only 53 seconds
into regulation. The Cornwall, ON native snuck around the
Quinnipiac net and lifted his own rebound across the goal line for
his 99th career point.
Though the Saints would control much of the play in the
early-going, Quinnipiac would turn up the heat offensively and
build a 2-1 lead after the first period. David Marshall
wristed a shot under the crossbar past the glove of St. Lawrence
junior netminder Alex Petizian at 8:42 of the first period to tie
the score at 1-1, with assists going to Sami Liimatainen and ECAC
Hockey leading scorer Bryan Leitch. The Bobcats then grabbed
their first cushion at 2-1 when Chris Myers snapped a wrist shot by
Petizian on a delayed penalty, with helpers going to Leitch and Dan
Henningson.
Penalties proved to be key in the first, as St. Lawrence was called for five penalties giving the Bobcats four power play tries including a 5-on-3 for 57 seconds. However, the Saints' penalty killing unit did a fantastic job of protecting Petizian and keeping the game well within striking distance.
The Saints would dominate the play in the second period, as they built an impressive 14-3 advantage in shots on goal in the frame. Though Fisher made 13 stops, he was unable to keep McBride at bay as Saint center pounced on a loose puck off of a Ross slap shot and scored his second of the game at 1:20 of the second period to tie the score at 2-2 and reach 100 career points.
Fisher matched Petizian's first period efforts in the second, as he turned in 13 saves to keep the home team tied with St. Lawrence despite being outworked on both ends of the ice.
The third period was the most evenly-played of the evening, Bobcats finished with a narrow 13-10 advantage in shots on goal. Quinnipiac would reclaim a one-goal advantage at 10:51 when Zach Hansen took a drop pass from Leitch to Petizian's left and one-timed a slap shot that beat the goaltender glove side. Scott Zurevinski also assisted on the third Bobcat goal.
The Scarlet and Brown would show their resiliency, however, as junior Alex Curran would level the scoring at 3-3 only 52 seconds after Hansen's goal. With the puck tied up in the slot in front of Fisher, the Saints were finally able to pry it free to Curran, who lifted a backhand across the goal line for his fourth goal of the year.
Both teams had solid chances to pick up the win in regulation, but Petizian and Fisher held their ground to force the five minute overtime session. However, it took the Saints only 1:06 seconds into overtime to net the game-winning goal and storm onto the ice in celebration as Ross rocketed a slap shot from the left point that beat a screened Fisher for his fourth goal of the year and a 4-3 St. Lawrence win.
The Saints finished with a 33-31 advantage in shots on goal, while Quinnipiac finished 1-for-5 on the power play to St. Lawrence's mark of 0-for-1. Petizian earned the win thanks to an impressive 28-save outing to move to 11-8-3 on the year, while Fisher suffered the loss, falling to 4-5-0 despite making 29-stops.
The Saints will look to earn a weekend sweep as they travel to Princeton University tomorrow, Saturday, February 14 to take on the Tigers at Hobey Baker Rink at 4:00pm.
