Engineers Triumph Over Brown
TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer scored four goals in the second period,
including three in a span of 1:15, and the Engineers defeated
Brown, 4-3. RPI got goals from four different players and
freshman Allen York made 21 saves for the win.
Brown opened a 1-0 lead on an Aaron Volpatti (Revelstoke, BC) just
41 seconds into the second period, but the Engineers tied the game
when freshman Justin Smith (Hammonds Plains, NS/Langley Chiefs)
scored his first career goal at the 3:21 mark. Sophomore
defenseman Jeff Foss (Moorhead, MN/Moorhead High School) took a
shot from the blueline that Garett Vassel (Westhampton, NY/New York
Apple Core) deflected to the ice. Smith, who was stationed
just outside the crease, jammed the puck over the line for the
goal. The Bears came right back to re-gain the lead just 39
seconds later when Jack Maclellan (Calgary, AB) scored on a rebound
that went up and over York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) and
over the goal line.
The score remained 2-1 in favor of the visitors until the 16:11
mark when sophomore Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy
Angels) scored on a slap shot from the right circle with RPI
enjoying a 5-on-3 power play. Freshman Alex Angers-Goulet
(St. Augustin, PQ/Langley Chiefs) put the home team ahead at 16:35
when he swept in a loose puck in the crease, again with the
Engineers skating with the man-advantage. Freshman Patrick
Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice) capped the flurry when he
notched a goal from the bottom of the right faceoff circle at 17:26
for a 4-2 lead.
Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA), who assisted on Brown's second goal,
pulled the Bears within one goal at 7:07 of the third period when
he took a feed from Eric Slais (Fenton, MO) and pushed the puck
through York from close range.
York picked up the win with six saves in the first period,
nine in the second and six more in the third. Offensively
Polacek and Cullen both finished with a goal and an assist, while
Foss and sophomore Tyler Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce
Kings) had two assists apiece.
Freshman Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) made 26 saves for Brown,
which was 1 for 8 on the power play and 8 for 10 on the penalty
kill.
RPI returns to action on Saturday night when it hosts #10 Yale, the
first place team in ECAC Hockey, at 7pm in the 32nd Annual Big Red
Freakout! Brown travels to Union for a Saturday matinee (4pm)
with the Dutchmen.
