Crimson Gets by Raiders
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Three different players scored
goals and sophomore Ryan Carroll made 29 saves for his first
collegiate win as the Harvard men's hockey team defeated Colgate,
3-2, Friday night at Bright Hockey Center.
Sophomore Michael Biega and senior Nick Coskren scored 48 seconds
apart early in the first period, and sophomore Chris Huxley broke a
third-period tie in favor of the Crimson (6-14-4, 6-7-4 ECAC
Hockey), which improved to 6-1-1 in league home games. Six
different players accounted for Harvard's six assists. Jason
Fredricks and David McIntyre tallied for the Raiders (8-16-5,
3-11-3), who got 20 saves from Bryan Bessette.
Huxley's game-winner came on a power play at 10:42 of the third
period. After the Crimson won the faceoff and passed the puck
around, Moriarty knocked down a loose puck in front to sophomore
Matt McCollem in the right corner. McCollem slid the puck past the
stick of a defender to Huxley on the left point, and his shot got
past Bessette and into the right side of the net.
Colgate held a 31-23 edge in shots, but Carroll held on for the win
in his second start for the Crimson. He made eight stops on Raider
power plays to help Harvard go 5 for 5 on the penalty kill. The
Crimson was 1 for 6 on the power play. Junior Doug Rogers won 15 of
his 19 faceoffs.
It took Harvard just 90 seconds to get on the board. Eric Kroshus
deflected the puck away from a Colgate player and to fellow
freshman Ryan Grimshaw in front of the Raiders penalty box.
Grimshaw passed to Michael Biega skating down the left side. Biega
made a nice move to drag the puck through a defender, and when
Bessette did not give him anywhere to shoot, Biega skated around
the net and tucked the puck into the other side.
Coskren made it 2-0 after another 48 seconds. After senior Jimmy
Fraser passed to classmate Steve Rolecek, who shot from the right
faceoff dot, Coskren slammed home the rebound for his team-leading
seventh goal. Colgate had the only full power play of the first
period and owned a 12-10 edge in shots in the frame.
Each team had a pair of power plays in the first half of the second
period, but neither team converted on the man advantage. Michael
Biega hit the post on a bid for his second goal of the night, and
Carroll made two big saves on the other end against Colgate's Tom
Riley.
Colgate broke through with the only goal of the frame at the 14:01
mark. Fredricks skated up the left side and got a wrist shot past
Carroll to halve the Crimson lead. The Raiders outshot Harvard,
9-6, in the second period. They tied the game when McIntyre
finished off a pass from Brian Day on the rush less than three
minutes into the third period.
The Crimson nearly went ahead when junior Alex Biega sent a shot
toward net that freshman Daniel Moriarty tipped on Bessette. On the
ensuing scrum in front, the Raiders were called for hitting after
the whistle, and Harvard made them pay with Huxley's goal.
The Raiders held a 10-7 edge in third-period shots but could not
convert on a late power play.
Harvard concludes the weekend series with a rivalry against No. 6
Cornell Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on
CBS College Sports.
