Saints Complete Weekend Sweep of Clarkson
POTSDAM, NY - Sophomore wing Jared Keller snapped a 1-1 tie with his second goal of a back-to-back weekend series between St. Lawrence and Clarkson at the seven minute mark of the second period and junior goalie Alex Petizian and the Saint penalty kill made it stand up for a 2-1 win and a sweep of the non-league set.
The Saints had a trio of big penalty kills in the third period and did not allow a shot by the Golden Knights on a pair of penalty kills midway through the third. The Saints then bottled up Clarkson in the final 1:30 of the game and did not allow Clarkson to pull its goaltender for an extra attacker until just over 11 seconds remained in the game. While Clarkson got one last rush, the Knights never got another shot at Petizian, who beat the Knights for the third time in his last four outings against them with a 24 save performance. The Saints improved to 10-9-1 on the season with the win which was televised nationally by ESPNU. SLU is now 4-0 in games on ESPNU over the last two seasons.
"Alex kept us in it early in the game," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "As we expected, Clarkson came out flying and it was a much different game than last night. We were able to weather that early storm thanks to Alex and then worked our way back into it.
"I thought we did a great job in both games defensively and our penalty killers did an excellent job all night long," Marsh added.
Clarkson, which found itself in an early hole in Saturday's series opener, came out flying Sunday afternoon and outshot the Saints 6-1 in the opening six minutes of the game. Alex had to come up with a number of big saves early in the game including one of Tim Marks' shorthanded bid on an early Saint power play.
The Saints broke the scoring ice in the game as Matt Generous scored his fourth of the season at 8:54, taking a pass from Casey Parenteau and slapping the puck past Clarkson goalie Paul Karpowich to the far post. The Saints had another chance to increase their lead when Jared Ross unleashed a slap shot from the point which banged off the post and stayed out.
The Golden Knights tied the game on a power play at 14:07. SLU killed off 23 seconds of five-on-three, but Chris D'Alvise was at the top of the faceoff circle and took a pass from Matt Beca, sliding a hard shot along the ice which snuck just inside the left post to tie the game.
The Saints took a 2-1 lead at 7:00 of the second period as Keller scored his third of the year in a scramble in front of Karpowich after picking up a rebound of a shot by Brock McBride with Mike McKenzie also assisting. All three of Keller's goals have come in the last five games, a stretch in which he has accounted for five points.
The Saints had to kill of 1:33 of five-on-three power play with just over seven minutes to play in the second period and did so with the help of a big save by Petizian. SLU held Clarkson to five shots on goal on the power play overall in seven power play chances and allowed just one shot on goal in the three third period Clarkson power plays.
"It was a good hockey game and a good weekend for us to build on as we head into league play the rest of the way," said Marsh.
