Big Green Beats Up Brown
HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team
used a four-goal outburst in the second period to take a 5-1
victory over Brown in league action on Saturday night. The victory
helps the Big Green rebound from a loss on Friday and improve to
10-6 overall, 7-4 in the ECAC. The loss drops the Bears to 1-10-4,
1-5-3 in the league. Joe
Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) was the top scorer for Dartmouth as the junior
potted two goals and an assist in the win.
In the second stanza, Dartmouth scored both early and late,
recording a goal four minutes into the period, midway through the
frame and with under two minutes to play.
Midway through the opening period a powerful slap shot by Rob
Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) almost had the home team on the board
first but Brown netminder Dan Rosen made a tremendous kick save to
prevent the goal.
Gaudet was able to crack the scoreboard, however at 7:28 with a
wraparound. Gaudet took the initial shot that was saved by Rosen
but the Big Green foward was able to pick the puck back up and wrap
it around the left post. Scott
Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) and Matt
Reber (Edina, Minn.) both assisted.
Brown tied the game quickly into the second period when Bobby
Farnham blasted the puck on net as Dartmouth netminder Jody O'Neill
(Nepean, Ont.) never saw it sail over his left shoulder.
Less than two minutes later Pritchard and the Big Green scored
another one, giving his team a lead it would never relinquish. Connor
Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) passed down as Kyle
Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) took a shot with Pritchard there for the
putback.
With under 10 minutes left in the frame Dartmouth took a two-goal
lead when Reber put a shot on Rosen that the netminder saved but a
Brown defender crashed into the net. Fleming had the presence of
mind to gather the puck and tuck it past the prone Rosen for the
score.
With less than two mintues to play the Big Green scored
back-to-back goals, taking a 5-1 lead into the break. At 1:48 Peter
Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) brought the puck down passing back to Adam
Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) who passed back across the ice to Doug
Jones (Marietta, Ga.) as the rookie potted his fourth of the
season. Just :52 later Gaudet added another one as assists went to
Reber and Evan
Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.).
In the third the Big Green had several chances, putting 18 shots on
net but Rosen was up to the challenge as he stopped every
night.
Dartmouth's power play woes continue as the Green went 0-2 in its
chances against Brown. The Big Green has potted just one extra man
goal in its last six games. On the flip side the penalty killing
unit has been stellar, allowing just eight opponent power play
strikes this season.
O'Neill finished with 21 saves on the night and is now 10-5 on the
season. Rosen had a season-high 42 saves and is 1-8-3.
Dartmouth will be back in action next weekend, traveling to
Manchester to take on the University of New Hampshire at the
Verizon Wireless Arena.
