Harvard Ties Brown Again
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Senior Steve Rolecek scored a second-period
goal, but Brown tied it in the third and got 50 saves from Dan
Rosen to hang on for a 1-1 draw Friday night at Bright Hockey
Center in the 152nd renewal of college hockey's oldest rivalry.
Jeff Buvinow had the tying goal on the power play for the Bears
(1-9-4, 1-4-4 ECAC Hockey, 0-2-2 Ivy League), while freshman Matt
Hoyle made 28 saves for the Crimson (4-10-3, 4-5-3, 1-2-2). Harvard
held a 51-29 edge in shots, the second time this season the Crimson
has outshot Brown by a wide margin only to see the Bears tie the
game with a third-period man-advantage tally.
Buvinow's goal came with barely five minutes remaining, after
Harvard had committed its fourth penalty of the third period. He
got a pass at the left point from Matt Vokes in the corner and got
his slap shot through a screen, off the post and into the goal.
Harvard got a power play of its own shortly afterward but could not
convert. The Crimson held the Bears without a shot on an overtime
power play and had a five-on-three advantage for the final 22
seconds after consecutive Brown penalties, but Rosen gloved a shot
from junior Doug Rogers just before the buzzer to thwart Harvard's
final chance. The Crimson held a 5-1 advantage in overtime
shots.
Brown finished 1 for 7 on the power play, while Harvard could not
convert on seven chances with the man advantage. Rogers went 16-5
at the faceoff dot to lead the Crimson to a 34-24 edge in faceoff
wins. Harvard is undefeated (8-0-1) in its last nine ECAC home
games, dating back to last season.
The first period was scoreless but not uneventful, as the Crimson
held a 16-11 edge in shots. Six of Harvard's shots came on a pair
of power plays. Rosen made a tough early save on a quick turnaround
release by freshman Alex Killorn, but his best stops on the second
man advantage, which started with an interference call at the 13:37
mark.
The Crimson looked destined for a lead when, on the power play,
freshman Daniel Moriarty got the puck in front from sophomore
Pier-Olivier Michaud in the right corner. Rosen went down to his
backside to stop Moriarty's first shot and then reached across his
body to tip away the rebound chance with his stick. He later saved
an Eric Kroshus shot from the left, and the puck rolled off the
stick of a Harvard player bidding for the rebound.
Brown had several shots in transition the other way in the first,
but Hoyle was up to the task.
Rosen could not keep Harvard off the board long in a second period
controlled by the Crimson. Rolecek put the Crimson on top at 1:40
of the first. After Rogers tapped the puck ahead to him, Rolecek
skated down the left side and ripped a shot over Rosen's glove for
a 1-0 lead.
The Bears' best chance to tie in the period came off the stick of
Aaron Volpatti. He took a pass out of the corner at the bottom of
the right circle and rang a shot off the crossbar. Rosen kept the
margin at one goal with a big save in the final minute, smothering
Rolecek's swat at an Ian Tallett rebound between his left arm and
torso.
After Harvard outshot Brown, 16-4, in the second period, the
Crimson had just a 14-13 edge in the third. Harvard's best chance
to stretch the lead to two goals came shorthanded. Freshman Rence
Coassin blocked a Brown shot and picked up the puck at the
offensive blue line, but his low shot was denied by Rosen.
The Crimson faces another Ivy League rival Saturday night. The
Crimson hosts Yale at 7 p.m.
