Raiders Fall to Lakers

Boxscore

HAMILTON, N.Y.  - Rick Schofield and Chad Nehring each scored twice and Brian Mahoney-Wilson stopped 34 shots as visiting Lake Superior State defeated Colgate 6-1 in a non-conference hockey clash, Friday evening at Starr Rink.

The Lakers, who improved to 6-9-7 overall, broke open a 1-0 game with three goals in the second period and never looked back.  Colgate fell to 6-9-5 with the loss.

Schofield opened scoring at 2:05 of the opening period with his fourth goal of the year.

Josh Sim and Nehring scored 15 seconds apart at 10:45 and 11:00 of the second to stake the Lakers to a 3-0 advantage.  Lake Superior State upped the lead with 50 seconds left in the period on Will Acton's second goal of the year.

Trailing 4-0, Colgate solved Lake Superior State's goalie with 25 seconds left in the second as Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wisc.) notched his third goal of the two-game series. Mahoney-Wilson made an initial save on Sean Carty (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), but the rebound bounced out and deflected off the skate of a charging Fredricks.  Carty was credited with an assist, his first point of the year.

The Lakers tacked on two more in the third as Nehring and Schofield scored at 4:16 and 11:46 respectively.

Colgate goalies faced 54 shots on the evening, saving 48 of them.  Starting goalie Alex Evin played the first 31 minutes and turned aside 28 shots before being replaced by Charles Long (Cleveland Heights, Ohio).  The junior made 14 saves before leaving the game with 10:06 in the third period.  Freshman Bryan Bessette (Melrose, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut in the net for the Raiders and was credited with his first six saves of his career.

Lake Superior State connected on two of six power play attempts, while the Raiders failed to convert on their four tries.

Colgate returns to action, next Friday as it travels to Troy, N.Y. to take on Rensselaer.  Opening face-off is set for 7 p.m.
