Potts' Pair Gives Union First Postseason Series Win
SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union College Dutchmen used three
first-period goals and four third-period goals to clinch its first
postseason series victory with a 7-2 victory against Clarkson on
Saturday during game two of the opening series of the ECAC Hockey
playoffs. Senior forward Chris Potts and sophomore forward Andrew
Buote each netted a career-high two goals to lead Union to its 18th
victory of the season. Sophomore goaltender Corey Milan turned
aside 32 shots for his third consecutive victory.
Potts scored the game-winning goal at the 19:24 of the first
period. While killing a penalty, sophomore forward John Simpson
caused a turnover and found Potts cutting hard to the net to make
it 3-1.
After Clarkson pulled within one 35 ticks into the second period
with a goal from Scott Freeman, Potts scored again this time at
11:20 of the third.
Shea Guthrie moved the score to 4-2 with an extra attacker on top
of a 5-on-3 power play. Buote potted two empty net goals –
one short handed – to pull away for good.
Senior forward Matt Cook netted the final goal of his career at
Messa Rink to produce the end result.
Potts and Buote joined sophomore forward Adam Presizniuk with two
points each. Presizniuk had a goal and an assist and is now a
team-high 36 points this season – just a point shy of tying
the Union single-season mark.
Presizniuk got the scoring rolling 3:27 into the game with a
riffle of a wrist shot that beat Richie LaVeau glove side.
The Dutchmen pulled ahead 2-0 at the 16:01 mark of the same period
with a shot from the point that was setup by junior defenseman Mike
Schreiber and sophomore forward Luke Cain.
The 32-save performance for sophomore goaltender Corey Milan gave
him his 18th victory of the season – the only Dutchmen
goaltender to accomplish the feat.
Union’s power play converted on 2-of-5 chances and is now
11-7-2 when scoring a man-advantage goal. In the last 10 games,
union has scored 13 power play goals, including two or more four
times.
Union’s four goals in the third period were the most by any
Dutchmen team in a playoff game. Along with the first period, Union
has scored three or more goals in a period nine times and is 8-0
when doing so.
The Dutchmen now await the results of other first round ECAC
Hockey game to see whom they will face in the quarterfinals. It
marks the second consecutive year that Union has made it to the
ECACH elite eight.
