Two Last-Minute Goals by Tigers Stun Cornell
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The finish to Saturday night's
Princeton-Cornell men's hockey game is the type of finish you might
expect to see when the nation's fifth and 10th-ranked teams face
one another. Trailing 1-0 late, the Tigers scored twice in the
final minute to knock off Cornell 2-1 and complete a weekend sweep
in Central New York.
The game, which was delayed an hour and 15 minutes because the
Princeton bus broke down on the way to Cornell. The game started
late but was a treat to the capacity crowd at Lynah Rink as both
teams executed well and there was great action at both ends of the
rink.
Neither team scored in an opening period that Cornell controlled
most of. The Big Red outshot Princeton 15-6 in the period although
both teams had good chances. Play evened in the second period and
Cornell broke the ice when Blake Gallagher scored on the power play
at 10:20.
Cornell won an offensive zone draw that Princeton appeared to have
cleared, but the Big Red wound up with the puck low. Riley Nash and
Colin Greening quickly got he puck in front and Gallagher patiently
waited for Princeton junior goaltender Zane
Kalemba to commit before shooting around him to give Cornell the
lead.
From that point though, Cornell seemed content to sit on the 1-0
lead and the Big Red nearly did so, save Princeton's last minute
heroics. The Tigers controlled play for much of the third but could
not crack Cornell netminder Ben Scrivens.
Finally, with Kalemba pulled in the final minute and an extra
attacker on the ice, the Tigers cashed in. Following a faceoff win
by junior Dan
Bartlett, senior Lee
Jubinville won a battle along the boards and laid the puck behind
the net to junior Cam
MacIntyre, who was making his first appearance for Princeton since
mid-March. MacIntyre fed the puck in front to Bartlett, who quickly
one-timed it by Scrivens to draw Princeton even with his eighth
goal of the season with 36 seconds left to play.
Cornell seemed stunned and Princeton scored the game winner only 18
seconds later when sophomore Taylor
Fedun capped a 3 on 1 rush by blasting the puck into the open net.
Junior Kevin
Kaiser got Fedun the puck coming into the neutral zone and Fedun
gave it to sophomore Kevin
Lohry just after crossing into the Cornell zone. Lohry sent it to
the middle and slid through a host of legs before Fedun pounced on
it and sent it into the goal for the game winner at 19:42.
Kalemba finished the night with 26 saves, while Scrivens had 25.
Shots on goal were even at 27-27 as Princeton crept back after
being outshot in the opening period.
The Tigers win was their third in a row and moved Princeton to 17-6
overall and 11-5 in the ECAC. The Tigers are back in action next
Friday against Clarkson at 7 p.m.
