Saints Battle Golden Knights to Draw

Boxscore

CANTON, NY - St. Lawrence University nullified a Clarkson rally with a game-tying goal with 1:07 to go in the second period and goaltenders Alex Petizian of the Saints and Richie LaVeau of Clarkson shut down the offenses the rest of the way as the Saints and Golden Knights skated to a 3-3 tie in a ECAC Hockey game Friday night.

The Saints kept a home unbeaten streak alive against their arch rivals and are 3-0-1 in their last four games with Clarkson in Canton. The tie was the first in the series since a 1-1 draw in the 1999-2000 season.

"That was a very good college hockey game," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "I thought both teams worked very hard from start to finish and either one of us could have come away with a win. You have to give Clarkson a lot of credit for the way they came back after we got a couple in rapid fire in the first period, and I thought our guys did a good job of collecting themselves after Clarkson rallied to take a lead."

St. Lawrence, ranked 20th nationally and 14-10-3 overall and 6-6-3 in the ECAC jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead, but Clarkson, 7-14-6, 5-7-3 came back with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead before Saint senior Kevin DeVergilio tied the game on a power play at 18:53 of the second period.

Petizian and LaVeau then made a series of spectacular stops to keep it tied as both teams had their chances, but couldn't break the deadlock.

Petizian made a series of great saves on a Clarkson power play late in the third period while LaVeau had 14 of his 39 saves in the third period and overtime. Two of the best chances to win it did not result in saves. Clarkson's Scott Freeman rang one off the far post with under two minutes to play in overtime and Saint forward Alex Curran split the Clarkson defense with under five seconds to play, but the puck hopped up on edge and he couldn't get a shot at LaVeau before time expired.

"Both goaltenders made big plays at key junctures of the game and both teams had a couple of posts or bad hops that might have ended up in goals," Marsh added. "It was the kind of game you want to see in front of a packed house with a great atmosphere."

The first period was an end-end-to-end affair with both teams creating great scoring chances. The Saints struck first, scoring goals just 29 seconds apart to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman wing Brandon Bollig got the first, his fifth of the season, when he backhanded the puck past  LaVeau at 15:10. The Saints then won the ensuing center ice faceoff and were forced into another faceoff deep in the Clarkson end. Senior center Brock McBride won the draw back to the center slot and senior defenseman Zach Miskovic one-timed a bomb under the crossbar for his 11th of the year at 15:39.

Clarkson, which scored only two goals in two non-league losses to the Saints earlier this season, came roaring back with three in the second period.

Senior Dan Tuttle put the Knights on the board when he tucked in a rebound for his first of the year as the puck came out of the corner just 50 seconds into the second period. Matt Beca then tied it with the first of his two in a scramble in front of Petizian at 11:18 and Beca then put Clarkson in front on a power play at 16:18 as he scored his eighth of the year from right in front.

St. Lawrence battled back with a power play goal of its own to tie it at 3-3 after two as DeVergilio scored his eighth of the season on a rebound of a shot by junior Mike McKenzie with 1:07 left in the period.

Petizian finished with 25 saves for the Saints who had a 42-28 edge in shots on goal.

The two teams will play a rematch at Clarkson's Cheel Arena on Saturday night.
