Big Red Rolls on the Road
AMHERST, Mass. -- Evan Barlow had a goal and an assist, while
Colin Greening and Tyler Roeszler both had a pair of assists, as
the Cornell men's hockey team skated to a 5-2 victory over
Massachusetts on Sunday evening at the Mullins Center in Amherst,
Mass. The win sends the Big Red to 9-1-3 on the year, while
Massachusetts drops to 9-8-1 on the season.
Ben Scrivens made 26 saves in goal for the Big Red, which went
1-for-4 on the power play on the night. Five different players
scored goals for the Big Red, with Joe Devin, Riley Nash, Michael
Kennedy and Blake Gallagher joining Barlow in lighting the
lamp.
Chris Davis and T.J. Syner scored goals for Massachusetts, which
got 21 saves from goaltender Paul Dainton. The Minutemen also
finished the game 2-for-6 on the power play.
Cornell got on the board on its first power play chance of the
night, coming just five minutes into the game. A hooking call on
T.J. Syner gave the Big Red its first chance, and the Big Red
wasted no time. A shot from the point by Mike Devin was initially
stopped, with the rebound coming off to Tyler Roeszler. Roesler's
attempt was also stopped by Dainton, but Joe Devin was camped out
in front of the crease and jammed the loose puck into the goal.
Just 30 seconds later, the Big Red went ahead, 2-0, when Riley Nash
scored his fifth goal of the season, ripping a wrist shot past
Dainton from between the circles. Evan Barlow and Colin Greening
received assists on the play.
At the 11:07 mark of the period, Massachusetts got its first power
play chance of the night on a hitting from behind call on Joe
Devin. The Cornell penalty killers successfully ended that chance,
blocking several shots from the point to keep the Minutemen off the
scoreboard.
Shortly after the return to full strength, the Minutemen had a
golden opportunity to break onto the scoreboard, as Syner found
himself open in front of the cage, but Scrivens was quick to make
the stop with his right leg. With 6:30 to play, it was again
Scrivens coming up big, as a turnover by Brendon Nash in the
defensive zone led to a 2-on-0 for the Minutemen, but Scrivens was
in position to make the stop on Alex Berry's attempt.
The Minutemen went back on the power play with 5:40 to go in the
first on a holding call on Blake Gallagher. A quick shot from the
point was stopped by Scrivens, and a quick whistle before the
rebound could be poked in helped to keep Massachusetts off the
scoreboard.
In the second period, Massachusetts got its third power play of the
night on a hitting from behind call on Riley Nash. As the penalty
on Nash expired, an obstruction-interference call on Evan Barlow
extended the power play another two minutes. This time, the
Minutemen needed just 32 seconds of it before Chris Davis tipped
home a shot from the point by Justin Braun as Massachusetts cut the
lead in half with 4:04 to play in the second.
With 10 seconds to play in the second period, Massachusetts' Martin
Nolet was whistled for tripping Colin Greening, giving Cornell its
second power play of the game, which would span the second
intermission.
As the third opened up, Joe Devin rang a shot off the post just as
the penalty on Nolet expired, but Massachusetts was able to hold
without allowing a goal. Still, with 3:50 gone in the period, Evan
Barlow found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
A shot from the point by Justin Krueger was deflected to the side
of the goal by Colin Greening, and Barlow was there to jam the puck
into the goal before Dainton could get back to the weak-side post
as the Big Red went back up by two.
Moments later, Michael Kennedy jammed a loose puck into the same
post, with Tyler Roeszler and Locke Jillson collecting assists as
Cornell went ahead by three, 4-1. An obstruction-interference call
on Massachusetts' Brett Watson then put the Big Red back on the
power play, but before the Big Red could get one past Dainton,
Tyler Roeslzer was called for goaltender interference with 12:45 to
play in the third period. As the penalty expired on Watson, the
Minutemen's Syner ripped a wrist shot past Scrivens, ending the
penalty on Roeszler with a power-play goal that cut the lead to
4-2.
Massachusetts called a timeout with 1:58 to play, keeping
goaltender Dainton on the bench in favor of the extra skater for
the final two minutes. That plan backfired, as Blake Gallagher
scored an empty net goal with 1:32 to play to provide the 5-2
margin.
Cornell returns to action next weekend, returning to Lynah Rink for
a pair of non-conference games against Niagara. Both games are set
for a 7 p.m. start as the Big Red closes out the non-league slate.
