Tigers Defeat Quinnipiac to Close First Half
PRINCETON -- Linemates Mike
Kramer, Matt
Arhontas and Mark
Magnowski each scored in the second period as the ninth-ranked
Princeton men's hockey team raced past Quinnipiac on Wednesday
night at Hobey Baker Rink for its 10th win of the season.
The line broke open a tie game midway through the period when
Kramer scored the first of the group's three goals on a delayed
penalty at 9:11. Junior defenseman Jody
Pederson began the play at his own blueline with a pass up to
Magnowski, who carried the puck into the Bobcats zone. Magnowski
went wide as Kramer and Arhontas went to the net and fed Kramer
with a pass. Kramer was being hooked, but was able to get off a
shot that was deflected into the air and went over Quinnipiac
goaltender Bud Fisher and wound up in the back of the net.
The line teamed up again for a goal five minutes later on the power
play. Kramer caught the Bobcats in a change as he crossed the
Quinnipiac blueline and sent a centering pass for Magnowski. He
couldn't handle the pass, which bounced off his stick and went to
the corner to grab it. He quickly fired the puck to the crease
where Arhontas redirected it by Fisher to give the Tigers a
two-goal lead.
Magnowski made it 4-1 four minutes later when the line scored its
third goal of the period. Princeton came into the zone on an
odd-man rush and Arhontas took a shot from the off-wing that Fisher
stopped but the rebound came right to Magnowski crashing the net
and he got it past Fisher for his team-leading sixth goal and 11th
point of the season.
Princeton never trailed in the game and went ahead for the first
time with the only goal of the first period. The Bobcats attempted
to clear the puck out of their zone on the boards, but senior Brandan
Kushniruk blocked the clearing attempt and had the puck bounce
right to sophomore Kevin
Lohry, who skated to the middle and beat Fisher high on the glove
side for his fourth goal of the season.
Princeton led 1-0 after a period, but Quinnipiac evened the score
on Zach Hansen's second period goal at 3:16 on the power play.
After being outshot 16-9 in the first period, Quinnipiac had the
first six shots of the second period, including the tying goal,
before Princeton went back ahead.
Princeton outshot Quinnipiac 37-24 in the game. Tiger junior
goaltender Zane
Kalemba made 23 saves for the win, while Fisher made 21 stops in
two periods for the loss. Nick Pisellini made 12 saves in the third
period.
The win moved the Tigers to 10-2-0 on the season and did not count
towards the league standings. Princeton reached 10 wins in its 12th
game. It is the fastest Princeton has gotten to 10 wins since the
1928-29 squad got there in 11 and the earliest date on the calendar
that Princeton has ever had 10 wins.
Princeton also took all three games from Quinnipiac this season and
has now won four games in a row over the Bobcats. The Tigers are
now off for the next 26 days before returning to action against
Minnesota State on Dec. 29.
