Boxscore

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team defeated their second nationally ranked team this week, downing No. 20 Dartmouth, 6-0, at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. Winners of five straight, the Bobcats improve to 11-6-1 overall and 6-3-1 in ECAC Hockey. Dartmouth falls to 8-5-0 on the season and 5-3-0 in league play. Quinnipiac has now won five straight games and nine of the last 11.

Freshman Dan Clarke (Belleville, Ont.) picked up his second career victory in as many career starts, with both coming against a nationally ranked team. Clarke picked up his first win of the week in a 5-2 win over No. 11 Air Force in the Championship Game of the Toyota UConn Hockey Classic. The freshman netminder picked up his first career shutout against the Big Green, turning back 19 shots over 60 minutes to improve to 2-0-0 on his young career.

"You never expect something like this to happen," Clarke said. "But when it does, it's pretty exciting."

For the second straight night, Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) and Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, B.C.) led the Bobcat offense. Following a 5-2 win over Hartford on Friday, Jan. 2 in which both players scored twice, the duo turned in their second straight multi-goal games. Both of Leitch's goals came on the power-play, while Beaudoin's last goal of the night also came with a man-advantage.

Leitch, the NCAA Division I assist leader with 23, finished without an helper for the first time in 10 games, while extending his streak of consecutive games with a goal or an assist to 11 games. He currently has eight goals and 23 assists for 31 points through 18 games. The senior wing totaled 32 points in 39 games last season.

Beaudoin brings his season total to seven goals and five assists for 12 points. Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) and Zach Hansen each added a pair of assists, while David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) also tallied a point in his 11th straight game with an assist on Leitch's first goal of the game.

Both team's played to a scoreless tie after the first period, in which both teams managed eight shots apiece, the Bobcats got on the board just 26 seconds into the second period. The goal by Leitch was assisted by Marshall and Lampe. Marshall passed the pack across the crease, where Lampe pushed it to Leitch. Leitch's shot beat Dartmouth starting goalie Jody O'Neill top-shelf. Beaudoin scored his first goal of the game, unassisted, on a broken clear attempt by the Big Green defense. Coming just 33 seconds after Leitch's at 59 seconds into the period, they were the two quickest goals scored this season.

At the 8:27 mark, Chris Myers (Wallaceburg, Ont.) scored his third goal of the season when he intercepted a pass by the Dartmouth defense at center ice. Myers slashed through the defense, leaving him one-on-one with O'Neill. Myers blast beat the freshman goalie on the near side to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead.

A little more than a minute later, Quinnipiac would strike again. Once again on the power-play, the Bobcats moved the puck around the Dartmouth zone. Andrew Meyer (St. Louis, Mo.) handled the puck just above the face-off circle closest to the Big Green bench before passing to Zach Hansen (White Bear Lake, Minn.) on the other side of the ice. Hansen unleashed a shot on goal that Leitch was able to re-direct to give the Bobcats a 4-0 lead, knocking O'Neill from the game.

Just under four minutes into the final period, freshman win Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) scored his fifth goal of the season. Classmate Spencer Heichman (Yorba Linda, Calif.) hooked up with Mike Atkinson (Sparta, N.J.) who fed Zurevinski as he crashed the net.

Beaudoin's goal at 12:05 was his seventh of the year after being assisted on the power-play goal by Lampe and Hansen. For the night, Quinnipiac was 3-for-7 on the power-play, while also managing to kill all five penalties called against them.

The Bobcats return to action next weekend when they host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday, Jan. 9 and Union College on Saturday, Jan. 10. Both games at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. are set for a 7 p.m. start.
