Engineers Upended by Boston U.
DENVER, Colo. - The third-ranked Boston University men's hockey
team scored the last four goals of the game and turned a 2-2
game into a 6-2 victory over Rensselaer, in the opening game of the
Wells Fargo Denver Cup, this afternoon at Magness Arena. With the
win, the Terriers improve to 12-4-1 overall, while the Engineers
fall to 3-14-1 on the season.
BU broke up the 2-2 tie on the power play at 18:06 of the second
period. Senior Jason Lawrence (Saugus, MA/U.S. National Under-18)
picked up a rebound just outside the reach of RPI senior netminder
Mathias Lange's (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) stick and
poked home the go-ahead marker. Assists went to senior Chris
Higgins (Lynnfield, MA/N.H. Jr. Monarchs) and freshman Chris
Connolly (Duluth, MN/Omaha Lancers).
The Terrier's then scored three times in first 7:23 of the third,
including goals from Lawrence, junior Luke Popko (Skillman, NJ/U.S.
National Under-18) and senior Brandon Yip (Maple Ridge,
BC/Coquitlam Express), to bring the game to its final margin at
6-2. Fresmman defenseman David Warsofsky (Marshfield, MA/U.S.
National Under-18) earned helpers on BU's final two goals.
Terrier's junior Zach Cohen (Schaumburg, Ill/Tri-City Storm) opened
the scoring at five minutes of the opening period on a pass from
behind the RPI cage. After the puck was chipped into the zone,
sophomore Joe Pereira (West Haven, CT/South Kent School) ran it
down and found Cohen right in front of the net for the tally.
Freshman Kevin Gilroy (North Bellmore, NY/South Shore Kings) gave
BU a 2-0 advantage a minute and a half later. Once again from
behind the net, freshman Corey Trivino (Toronto, ON/Stouffville
Spirit) snapped a quick pass into the low slot where Gilroy was
waiting. Lange caught a piece of the shot with his right pad,
before it found its way inside the near post.
The Engineers pulled to within a goal (2-1) at 10:48 of the first.
Senior captain Matt Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Notre Dame
Hounds) took a shot from the right circle that found its way
through a screen and under the right arm of BU freshman netminder
Grant Rollheiser (Chilliwack, BC/Trail Smoke Eaters). He was set up
on the play by sophomore Bryan Brutlag (Lakeville, MN/Academy of
Holy Angels) and senior Kurt Colling (Ripley, ON/Vernon
Vipers).
Rensselaer earned the only power-play of the first, when Pereira
was sent off on a five-minute major for hitting from behind with a
game misconduct. The man-advantage carried in to the second
period.
Midway though the second (9:45), RPI sophomore Jeff Foss (Moorhead,
MN/Moorhead High School) went off on an identical hitting from
behind call on a hit in the corner of the Engineer's defensive
zone.
Eight seconds into the penalty freshman Alex Angers-Goulet (St.
Augustin, PQ/Langley Chiefs) buried the equalizer on a short-handed
breakaway. After poking the puck off of a BU defenseman's stick,
Angers-Goulet flew into the Terrier's zone and beat Rollheiser
five-hole to knot the game at 2-2.
Rollheiser (4-3-0) earned the win for the Terriers, making 13
saves, while Lange (2-10-1) had 32 stops for RPI.
The Engineers return to action tomorrow afternoon when they play in
the consolation game of the Denver Cup against either #5 Denver or
Holy Cross. Puck drop is set for 6:30pm (ET). The Terriers take on
either the Pioneers or Crusaders at 9pm (ET).
