Late Goals Lead Bobcats To Victory
HAMDEN, Conn. - Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) and Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, B.C.) each scored twice as the Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team defeated Harvard University, 5-2, in an ECAC Hockey game at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 10-6-1 overall and 5-3-1 in ECAC Hockey while Harvard drops to 4-9-2 overall and 4-4-2 in league play.
Leitch also added a helper in the Bobcats' win to increase his NCAA Division I leading total to 23. Linemate David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) had a goal and an assist in the win. Both players have now registered a point in 10 consecutive games. In goal, senior Bud Fisher (Peterborough, Ont.) stopped 21 of 23 shots for the win.
The win is Quinnipiac's first win against Harvard at the TD Banknorth Sports Center all-time and its first at home since Nov. 4, 2005 when the Bobcats defeated Harvard, 5-2, at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. in their first ECAC Hockey game all-time. The all-time match-up at the TD Banknorth Sports Center produced back-to-back ties, 3-3 on Jan. 4, 2008 and 2-2 on Jan. 30, 2007.
Beaudoin scored his fourth goal of the season just over eight minutes into the first period to give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage. Spencer Heichman (Yorba Linda, Claif.) handled the puck deep in the Bobcats' zone before finding Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.)on the left flank. Lampe hooked up with Beaudoin to beat Harvard's Matt Hoyle for a power-play goal and the early lead.
The Crimson tied the game at the 11:58 mark when Nick Coskren tallied his fifth goal of the season. Doug Rogers started the play, connecting with Alex Biega. Biega then put a shot on goal that was deflected by Bobcat goalie Bud Fisher (Peterborough, Ont.) and picked up by Coskren.
Quinnipiac scored their second power-play goal of the night with 7:31 remaining in the second period. David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) was denied on a shot from close range before collecting his own rebound and sending the puck out to the point to Dan Henningson (Edmonton, Alb.). Henningson found Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, B.C.) by himself just below the right face-off circle. Leitch unleashed a wrist shot that beat Hoyle top shelf to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.
Biega's second goal of the game tied the game at 2-2 midway through the third period. Daniel Moriarty controlled the puck in the neutral zone before finding Colin Moor. Moore passed to Biega who put a shot on goal. Fisher's save sent the puck up between the face-off circle where Biega was waiting to bang home the neutralizer.
Beaudoin scored Quinnipiac's first of three third period goals, netting the go-ahead tally with 3:26 to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead. Beaudoin was fed by freshman Yuri Bouharevich to the left of Hoyle in net. Beaudoin wrapped around the net and buried the goal. Marshall then scored his team-leading 10th goal of the year at the 2:48 mark. Marshall received a pass from Leitch just above the left face-off circle. Marshall skated between the face-off circles and blasted a shot past Hoyle to give Quinnipiac a 4-2 lead. Leitch added an empty net goal with less than a minute to play to seal the Bobcats' win.
