Dutchmen Beat UConn in Home Opener

Boxscore

SCHENECTADY, NY - Sophomore right-winger Stéphane Boileau (Blainville, QB) fired a one-timer from the slot past Huskies goaltender Beau Erickson for the game-winning goal with 5:38 remaining in the second period of Union's 3-2 victory against Connecticut on Friday night.   Boileau also set the stage for a thrilling finish by taking a penalty with 1:37 remaining in the game, but the Dutchmen stood strong and walked away with the victory to improve their record to 3-1-1. With the loss the Huskies go to 2-3-0.

Joining Boileau with a goal on the score sheet were freshman center Kelly Zajac (Winnipeg, MN) and sophomore left-winger Adam Presizniuk (Calgary, AB).   Sophomore goaltender Corey Milan (Great Barrington, MA) turned aside 26 shots, including a sprawling stick save with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Milan record mirrors his team's and he improves his career mark to 9-9-1.

Zajac's wasted no time scoring his second career goal only 3:05 into the game on a scramble in front of the net. After senior left-winger Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) and senior right-winger Chris Potts (Phillipsburgh, PA) had their shots either blocked or saves, Zajac jammed in the rebound into a wide-open net from the doorstep.

Union road the momentum to its next goal, less than a minute later, at 4:03. Boileau found a wide-open Presizniuk to the right of the net where he one-timed home his third goal of the season. The performance was Boileau's second multi-point game of the season.

The Huskies senior defenseman Sean Erickson had an answer at 6:17 to pull his team within. Erickson, who went short side, was setup by sophomore center Jason Krispel and freshman left-winger Marcello Ranallo.

Early in the second, UConn experienced the same momentum Union had earlier in the game, but Milan kept the Huskies at bay with nine saves.   Boileau put Union back up by two when junior center Jason Walters (Renfrew, ON) sent a laser of a pass from the right face-off dot to Boileau in the slot.

Junior left-winger Brendan Olinyk helped the Huskies crawl back into the game with a goal from down low 12:51 into the third period. His first goal of the season was setup by senior center B.J. Bayers and sophomore right-winger Matt Pedemonti.

Union finished the game 0-3 on the power play, while killing off 5-of-6 penalties.   The Dutchmen return to Messa Rink on Friday, Nov. 7 for their conference opener against Dartmouth at 7 p.m
