Bears Drop Opener
PROVIDENCE, RI - 10th-ranked Princeton (1-0-0) used a two-goal
second period to break open a 1-1 game and post a 4-1 victory over
the Brown men's ice hockey team (0-1-0) on Friday evening at Meehan
Auditorium. The game was the second of two played on Friday
afternoon in day one action of the Showcase at Meehan. In the
earlier game, Yale came away with a 3-1 exhibition win over Ontario
Institute of Technology.
The Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead at 11:36 of the first period when
Brett Wilson tipped a Brad Schroeder shot from the left point past
junior Dan Rosen (Syosset, NY) with Princeton on the
man-advantage.
However, just 1:10 later, Brown tied the contest when senior Ryan
Garbutt (Winnipeg, MAN) scored just two seconds into a Brown
power-play to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Devin Timberlake (Port
Alberni, BC) won the face-off back to senior Matt Vokes (Auburn,
MA), who redirected the puck across to Garbutt in the high slot.
Garbutt one-timed the shot past Zane Kalemba for his first goal of
the season.
Mark Magnowski broke the tie with what would prove to be the
game-winning goal with another power-play goal at 8:03 of the
second. Rosen made back-to-back stops on Cam Ritchie and Matt
Godlewski, but couldn't corral the rebound and Magnowski, lying on
his stomach, swatted the puck into the near side of the net for the
2-1 lead.
Just 2:50 later, the Bears got caught in an extended defensive zone
shift and could not clear the zone, which led to the Tigers' third
goal, scored by Lee Jubinville.
Brown failed to find a rhythm in the second period, spending a
large portion of the period on the penalty kill, as the Bears were
whistled for eight minutes in penalties and Princeton used that
advantage to build a 15-3 margin in shots on goal for the
period.
Magnowski capped the scoring at 5:35 of the third period, flipping
the puck over Rosen.
For the game, Princeton outshot Brown, 38-13, as Rosen finished the
night with 34 saves, including 13 in the second period. Zane
Kalemba recorded 12 saves for the Tigers.
Brown returns to action tomorrow evening in the second day of the
Showcase at Meehan. The Bears will host Yale in a 7:37 contest.
Game video will be streamed live on the internet, while the audio
will be aired both over the internet and locally on AM790 WPRV.
Princeton and UOIT will meet up in the 4:30 game.
