Bobcats Fall to River Hawks

Boxscore

LOWELL, Mass. - The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team lost to the University of Massachusetts Lowell in a non-conference game played at Paul E. Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass. The Bobcats drop to 1-2 overall while UMass Lowell improves to 3-2.

The River Hawks scored four unanswered goals, including three in the first period to knock Quinnipiac's starting goalie from the game, before Bobcat freshman Spencer Heichman (Yorba Linda, Calif.) scored with just over six minutes to play in the game.

The River Hawks took a 1-0 lead 8:35 into the game, 33 seconds after the Bobcats were whistled for hitting from behind. On the power play, Maury Edwards dropped a pass off to Ben Holmstrom. Holmstrom's shot was blocked by Quinnipiac goalie Bud Fisher (Peterborough, Ont.) to his left where Kory Falite was wide open to collect the rebound and put it home.

At the 11:58 mark, UMass Lowell put a rush on Fisher, putting several shots on goal. Fisher turned away the first two shots on goal before attempting to smother a shot by Paul Worthington. The puck trickled out the crease where Holmstrom picked it up and flipped his first goal of the season over Fisher, who was still laying on the ice. Falite was also credited with an assist on the play as the River Hawks took a 2-0 lead.

UMass Lowell took a 3-0 lead at the 13:57 mark after Quinnipiac failed to clear the puck out of the crease, allowing Scott Campbell to net his second goal of the season. The goal also ended the night for Fisher as he gave way to freshman Nick Pisellini (Itasca, Ill.). Nick Schaus and Mark Roebothan were credited with assists on the goal.

The River Hawks scored their second power play goal of the game less then two minutes into the second period. Lowell worked the puck around the Bobcats' penalty kill before Falite took a pass from Worthington on the doorstep, slipping it past Pisellini for his second goal of the night. Jeremy Dehner was also credited with an assist as UML took a 4-0 lead.

Pisellini was locked in after allowing his first goal of the game, stopping UMass Lowell's next eight shots over the remainder of the second period as the River Hawks sent Quinnipiac to the locker room for the second admission trailing 4-0. The freshman netminder stopped 23 shots in goal for the night.

Heichman scored his second goal of the season at the 12:53 mark. Heichman's shorthanded goal came off a pass from Mike Atkinson (Sparta, N.J.) who picked up his first point of the season on the assist.

The Bobcats return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1 when they host the University of Connecticut in their home opener at 7:07 p.m. at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. The game will be televised live on WCTX/MyTV9.
