Saints Downed by BU
BOSTON, MA - It all came down to finishing Saturday night as Boston University broke a two-game losing streak at the hands of St. Lawrence with a 4-1 non-conference win in Boston.
The Saints made their first appearance in the palatial Agganis Arena at BU and played the Terriers for the first time in Boston since November of 1997. The Terriers, who had lost to the Saints in overtime at neutral sites in the last two meetings between the two teams, took a 27-26-2 series lead and won for the eighth straight time in Boston as they broke open a one-goal game with a pair of pretty special teams goals in the second period.
St. Lawrence, now 5-7-1 overall, had their chances against BU, but couldn't finish things off against rookie goalie Kieran Millan, who improved to 6-1-0 on the season for the eighth-ranked Terriers, now 9-4 and a perfect 5-0 in non-league games.
"BU is an outstanding team in transition and really skilled offensively," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "They put a lot of pressure on your defense and certainly showed that they can turn it around in a hurry. We have been having a tough time putting the puck in the net, and it hurt us tonight. We had some great chances, but just couldn't put one away."
The Terriers struck first after a couple of Grade-A opportunities for the Saints came up empty. Brandon Yip finished off a two-on-one, taking a pass from Nick Bonino and one-timing a shot past Saint goalie Kain Tisi from short range at 8:43 of the first.
The Saints came back to tie it on the power play as Jeremiah Cunningham won a draw in the BU end and Mike McKenzie one-timed a shot along the ice that beat Terrier goalie Kieran Millan at 15:40. It was McKenzie's second goal of the weekend and the first Saint power play goal in four games.
BU took the lead again with just 19.7 seconds to play in the first period as Vinny Saponari cycled the puck back to the blue line and senior captain Matt Gilroy sent a hard shot toward net which Zach Cohen redirected as he cut in front for his third goal of the season.
While the Saints had some great chances to pull back even in the second period, the Terriers were the ones who came away with the goals. Colin Wilson scored on a power play as he cut to the post and Chris Higgins fed him a cross-crease pass for the slam dunk at 14:41 and defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk finished off a perfectly executed shorthanded two-on-one with his third of the year off a feed by John McCarthy at 18:52.
Millan had a big period for the Terriers as he had 14 saves including several in close as the Saints generated a number of good scoring chances, but either couldn't get good wood on the shots or were frustrated by the rookie netminder.
