Three Shorthanded Tallies Give Dartmouth Overtime Win
HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team registered three
shorthanded goals as the Big Green (7-4) defeated Army (4-10-1),
5-4 in overtime on Sunday, the first day of the Ledyard National
Bank Classic. The victory moves Dartmouth into the championship
game against Bemidji State, which defeated UMass, 4-2 in the day's
opener.
Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) was the hero on the night as the
senior potted just his second goal of the season, 1:43 into the
overtime frame with a shorthanded goal from Scott Fleming
(Plainfield, Ont.).
Army jumped on the board first when Kyle Maggard took a shot thatt
was blocked. Big Green goaltenderJody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) came
out for the save but Mike Hull was there to put it behind
O'Neill.
Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) and Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.)
executed the perfect give-and-go just a few minutes later as the
linemates tied the game at 1-1.
Paul Lee (Garden City, N.Y.) gave Dartmouth a two-goal lead with
5:03 left to go in the period. Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.)
took a shot on netminer Jay Clark that was saved out to Lee who
also took a shot that rebounded out to Shields for the score.
The Black Knights quickly took the lead again in the early goings
of the second period with back-to-back goals. Eric Sefchik and Joey
Ammon helped the visitors to a 3-2 lead.
But Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) with two shorthanded strikes kept
his team in the game. Reeds first goal of the season came when he
and classmate Matt Reber (Edina, Minn.) connected on a shortie that
traveled the length of the ice.
Maggard and Ammon teamed up for Army's fourth goal before Reeds
came back with a steal at center ice, skating in alone on Clark for
his second shorthanded goal of the contest.
Pritchard had a chance late in the game to win as his one-on-one
with Clark was saved in the waning minutes of the third. Early in
the overtime Pritchard and Fleming tried to connect on a
give-and-go that went just wide.
O'Neill (7-3) finished with 23 saves while Clark (2-4-1) had
32.
Dartmouth and Bemidji will meet tomorrow at 7:00 pm in the
Championship Game while UMass and Army will team up at 4:00 for the
