Cornell Rallies for Tie Against Colgate
ESTERO, Fla. -- For the second time this season, the Cornell
men's hockey team fell behind to Colgate by a pair of goals. And
for the second time, the Big Red rallied to claim a 2-2 tie against
the Raiders, this time scoring the draw in the championship game of
the Florida College Classic at Germain Arena on Sunday night in
Estero, Fla.
Unlike the first two meetings of the year between the Big Red and
the Raiders, this game had no ECAC Hockey implications, though the
two sides were skating for the Ned Harkness Cup, presented to the
annual winner of the tournament. After 65 minutes, the two teams
ended in a tie, but a shootout was used to determine the winner,
with Cornell's Blake Gallagher and Jared Seminoff scoring the two
goals in a 2-0 shootout victory as the Big Red claimed its third
Florida College Classic title in nine seasons.
Colgate skated out to the early lead, capitalizing on a pair of Big
Red turnovers. Midway through the first period, David McIntyre
poked loose a puck in the Cornell zone and it found its way onto
the stick of Austin Smith, who skated in alone on Cornell
goaltender Ben Scrivens and slotted the puck into the goal. Six and
a half minutes later, with the Big Red on the power play, Ethan Cox
intercepted a Cornell pass in the neutral zone and broke in alone
on Scrivens, putting the puck in to the left of the junior
netminder as Cornell trailed, 2-0, after one period.
In the second, the Big Red got a goal back on the power play as
Gallagher scored his first goal of the season, taking a pass from
Colin Greening and ripping a shot from close range past Colgate
netminder Charles Long at the 6:48 mark of the period. Nearly 10
minutes later, Michael Kennedy poked home a loose puck in front of
the goal, with Tyler Roeszler and Sean Whitney collecting assists
on the play.
Neither team could put a go-ahead goal in during the third period
or overtime, as the game ended in a 2-2 tie for the second
consecutive time among the 135 meetings between the two schools. In
the shootout to determine the tournament winner, Gallagher,
shooting second for Cornell, and Seminoff, shooting fourth, both
found the back of the net, while Scrivens stopped all four of
Colgate's attempts.
Cornell finished the game 1-for-7 on the power play, while holding
Colgate 0-for-3 on the man advantage. Scrivens finished with 14
saves, while Long stopped 18 shots for the tie for the Raiders.
Cornell returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Massachusetts for
a 5 p.m. game against the Minutemen.
