Dartmouth Defeats Providence

Boxscore

PROVIDENCE, R.I. The Dartmouth men's hockey team defeated Providence College, 4-2 on Friday. Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) scored a goal and an assist as the Big Green moves to 6-3-0 on the season and the Friars fall to 2-10-1.

The first Providence power play came midway through the first period but it was Dartmouth with the first shot as Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) with a shorthanded shot. The Big Green killed the Friars penalty.

Joe Stejskal (Grand Rapids, Minn.) notched three straight shots on net as the sophomore tried to get his team on the board.

Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) and Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) tried to connect a give-and-go but Providence netminder Justin Gates was up to the task.

A second Dartmouth penalty with less than five minutes showing in the period had the Big Green penalty killers on their heels as the Friars made goalie Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) make several acrobatic saves as Providence recorded two straight shots and hit the pipe once.

Dartmouth began the second period on the power play as Providence was whistled at the end of the first with a tripping call. The fourth-ranked Big Green power play unit went to work as Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) had the first shot on Gates.

Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) took a shot from the point as Estoclet was there to tip it past Gates for the 1-0 score. Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) capitalized again just three minutes later with another power play strike. Adam Estsoclet (Orono, Minn.) shot down towards Gates with Owsiak slamming home the rebound. Jones assisted on both scores.

Just three minutes later Troy Mattila (Rockford, Ill.) brought the puck down passing back to Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) who passed forward to Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) as the junior potted his first of the season.

The Friars got on the board at 5:41 as Ian O'Connor cashed in a rebound by John Cavanagh as Providence got one back shortly before the second break.

Midway through the final stanza Rob Maloney fired one over O'Neill's shoulder to put Providence down by just a goal. Mark Fayne almost tied the contest but O'Neill was there for the save.

Matt Reber (Edina, Minn.) had a short handed opportunity but the puck was poked away at the last second by Gates. The Big Green then went on its own power play as Dartmouth looked for an insurance goal with seven minutes to play.

Reber gave his team that insurance with a power play goal at :54.

Dartmouth now heads home for a 4:00 pm matchup with Boston College on Sunday. The game will be the Big Green's annual toy drive for CHaD.
