Cornell Suffers First Loss, Falls at North Dakota
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- North Dakota's Matt Frattin exploded for
three goals and an assist as the Fighting Sioux sent the Cornell
men's hockey team to its first defeat of the season, 7-3, on Friday
night in Grand Forks, N.D. Cornell falls to 4-1-2 on the year,
while North Dakota improves to 5-7-1 on the season.
North Dakota's Chay Genoway added a goal and four assists for the
Fighting Sioux, who also got goals from Ryan Duncan, Evan Trupp and
Ryan Martens. Cornell's goals came courtesy of Riley Nash, Colin
Greening and Locke Jillson, who scored his first career goal to
open the scoring in the contest.
Fighting Sioux netminder Brad Eidsness picked up the win, making
21 saves. Cornell's Ben Scrivens took the loss, his first of the
season, after allowing five goals on 26 shots. Mike Garman came on
in relief and picked up eight saves while allowing the final two
goals. North Dakota finished the night 3-for-7 on the power play,
while Cornell went 0-for-4.
Two and a half minutes in, Cornell got the first real scoring
chance when Jared Seminoff ripped a shot from the point that
Eidsness stopped. The rebound came off to Michael Kennedy, who
skated toward the circle to the freshman goaltender's right and
ripped off a quick shot that Eidsness was quick to glove down.
After the ensuing faceoff, North Dakota cleared the zone, but
Cornell broke back in and gained a 2-on-1 with Locke Jillson
lofting a backhand shot over the near shoulder of Eidsness into the
back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
That lead was short-lived, however, as North Dakota came right
back down a minute and a half later and ripped a shot that Scrivens
stopped, but the rebound came off to Matt Frattin, who slipped the
puck underneath Scrivens and into the net to knot the score at one.
Chay Genoway and Evan Trupp picked up assists on the play.
That didn't last long, either, as Cornell's top line of Riley
Nash, Evan Barlow and Colin Greening combined for a quick bit of
passing in the North Dakota end for a 2-1 lead. Nash, with the puck
on the far side boards, dropped the puck into the corner where
Barlow was alone. Barlow saw a streaking Greening coming down
between the circles, and slid off a perfect pass for a one-timer as
Greening ripped the shot past the glove of Eidsness.
North Dakota again tied the score with just under three minutes to
play in the first period. On a power play after an
obstruction-hooking call against Jared Seminoff, the Sioux worked
the puck down into the corner before what appeared to be a missed
clearance by the Big Red found its way onto the stick of Ryan
Martens, who roofed a shot past a diving attempt of Scrivens, with
Frattin and Trupp picking up assists.
Just 20 seconds later, the Big Red found itself on the power play
after an interference call on North Dakota's Brad Miller. Cornell
ripped off three shots on the man advantage, but could not solve
Eidsness as the penalty expired and the period ended with the two
teams tied, 2-2.
North Dakota went back on the power play at the 3:21 mark of the
second period on a hooking call on Tyler Roeszler. Cornell was able
to clear the zone three times in the first 1:15 before an offsides
call moved the faceoff down into the Sioux end. North Dakota worked
the puck back into the Cornell end, and with six seconds left on
the penalty to Roeszler, Taylor Davenport was called for a boarding
minor, giving a short 5-on-3. Roeszler got out of the box, but a
holding call on Brendon Nash just 30 seconds later gave another,
longer 5-on-3 for 1:34. North Dakota wasted no time in
capitalizing, zig-zagging the puck across the Cornell end to Ryan
Duncan on the back post, who quickly slid the puck over the
outstretched leg of Scrivens as North Dakota went to 2-for-3 on the
power play and ahead, 3-2. Duncan then missed a shot off Scrivens'
left post with 30 seconds left on the penalty to Nash, but Cornell
was able to kill off the remainder of the power play.
North Dakota's Corey Fienhage was called for high-sticking with
9:17 left in the second period after getting his stick up in the
facemask of Patrick Kennedy. With 42 seconds left on the penalty on
Fienhage, Riley Nash was called for tripping, sending him ot the
box and putting the two teams at 4-on-4. Neither team was able to
capitalize on either the 4-on-4 or on the short North Dakota power
play, and the period ended with the Sioux up, 3-2.
North Dakota needed just 51 seconds of the third period to go
ahead, 4-2. After winning the opening faceoff, the Sioux kept the
puck in the Cornell end, then fed a centering pass from behind the
Cornell goal to Chay Genoway in the slot, and Genoway's one-timer
beat Scrivens high to the glove side.
Cornell cut into the lead on Riley Nash's third goal of the year,
as the sophomore got in behind the North Dakota defense and took a
pass from his brother, Brendon, and skated in one-on-one against
Eidsness before lifting a puck over the right shoulder of the
freshman netminder.
Again, though, North Dakota was quick to respond, as Cornell got
caught in a line change and the Sioux's Frattin skated in alone on
Scrivens and again lifted a shot hight to the glove side of the
junior goaltender, ending his night and giving freshman Mike Garman
his first collegiate action.
North Dakota made the score 6-3 with 4:59 to play when a scrum in
front of the Cornell goal resulted in Garman getting run over and
the puck being batted into the goal by Trupp. Despite reviewing the
play on the video monitor, the goal stood and Cornell found itself
down by three.
A questionable roughing call that left Cornell coach Mike Schafer
asking for an explanation from the officials led to the Sioux's
seventh goal of the night, as a shot from the point by Genoway was
tipped over the shoulder of Garman by Frattin for his third goal of
the night.
The two teams will go at it again on Saturday night in a 7 p.m.
Central time start at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
