Harvard Falls to LSSU in Showdown Semifinals
Boxscore
MADISON, Wis. -- Lake Superior State scored three unanswered
goals, starting with a pair 91 seconds apart in the second period,
to pull away to a 6-2 win against the Harvard men's hockey team in
the opening round of the 20th annual Badger Hockey Showdown
Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center.
Josh Sim recorded two goals and an assist, while Troy Schwab
notched a goal and three helpers for the Lakers (5-8-6). Pat Inglis
made 25 saves to help guide LSSU to Sunday's championship game
against Alabama-Huntsville or No. 14 Wisconsin. The Crimson (4-7-2)
will face the loser of the Chargers' and Badgers' Saturday-night
matchup.
Junior Alex Biega had a goal and an assist for Harvard, while
freshman Daniel Moriarty netted the Crimson's other goal. Freshman
Matt Hoyle made 12 saves for Harvard, while junior John Riley had
11 stops. The Lakers held a 29-27 edge in shots.
The Crimson could not take advantage of a strong start. Harvard
had the first three shots of the game before an LSSU forward got an
open shot in the slot that was gloved by Hoyle. Harvard countered
with a strong shift by the line of Michael Biega, Moriarty and
Michael Del Mauro that resulted in four more shots on net. On the
next shift, Eric Kroshus put a shot on Inglis on a rush, and
Harvard had a 10-1 edge in shots as the first period approached its
midway point.
The Lakers changed the momentum with one shot at 9:51 of the first
period. Schwab put LSSU on top with a wrist shot over the glove of
Hoyle from the bottom of the right circle. Zac MacVoy and Simon
Gysbers assisted on the goal.
The first penalty of the game came at the 12:07 mark, when Schwab
was whistled for interfering with Michael Biega. Harvard got its
power play set up early but could not get a shot on Inglis. Shortly
after the LSSU kill, Harvard was called for a penalty. The Lakers
capitalized, as Schwab carried the puck over the blue line on the
left and fed Sim, who cut to the middle and found the right side of
the net with his wrist shot from the slot.
Alex Biega trimmed the lead in half with a spectacular goal at
18:51 of the first period. He picked up a loose puck at the LSSU
blue line, dangled it in front of a defender, pulled it past him,
pulled up as he approached the goal line and flipped a shot off
Inglis and over the goal line. The Crimson held a 13-9 advantage in
first-period shots.
Harvard again came out with good offensive-zone work early in the
second period, but the Lakers again scored first, with Rick
Schofield tucking a shot past a diving Hoyle. The Crimson, however,
struck back just 27 seconds later. Passes from Chris Huxley and
Michael Biega set up Alex Biega for an open slap shot that hit
Inglis and trickled just wide of the right post. Moriarty had been
screening Inglis and was there to collect the puck and push it into
the goal.
Lake Superior State got back some breathing room with two quick
goals. Gysbers had the fourth LSSU goal, accepting a Schofield pass
from behind the net and scoring on a low shot from the right. Fred
Cassiani made it 5-2 at 15:39 of the second period, redirecting in
a pass right-to-left pass on the rush from MacVoy.
LSSU held a 10-4 shots edge in the second.
There was no scoring for the first minutes of the final period,
with one of Harvard's best chances coming when freshman Peter
Starrett bringing the puck down the right side and getting past a
defender for a shot on Inglis. Sim made it 6-2 for LSSU, waiting at
the right post and tapping in a pass out of the left corner by
Cassiani.
Sophomore Pier-Olivier Michaud then had a chance to cut into the
lead, skating into the slot and one-timing a pass from freshman
Colin Moore, but Inglis made the point-blank stop. Each team had 10
shots in the third period.
