Union Claims Governor’s Cup Title

Boxscore

ALBANY, NY - Third-period heroics by junior right-winger Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, QB) with 6:09 lifted the 2-1-1 Union College Dutchmen ice hockey team to a 4-2 victory against Colgate (3-1-0) in the championship game of the 2008 Governor's Cup. The title was the first for Union since 1993.

The game-winner came after Colgate turned the puck over just outside of its defensive end and sophomore center John Simpson (Boxborough, MA) sent a touch pass ahead to a streaking Valery-Trabucco. After receiving the pass, he fought off a Red Raider defender and sent a snap shot into the back of the net.

Union kept the pressure on and the defense limited Colgate to two shots the rest of the way despite playing with an empty net at the other end.

Sophomore left-winger Adam Presizniuk (Calgary, AB) added an empty net goal for insurance.

Sophomore goaltender Corey Milan (Great Barrington, MA) made 26 saves for his eighth career victory and was named to the tournament's Most Valuable Player and to the all-tournament team.

Joining Milan on the all-tourney team was Valery-Trabbuco, senior left-winger Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) and senior defenseman Brendan Milnamow (Wilton, CT)

The first period was flooded with penalties - six between the two schools. The Red Raiders struck first with a man up at 12:28 of the first period when junior forward David McIntyre scored his fourth goal of the season. Senior forward Tom Riley and sophomore forward Francois Brisebois picked up the assists.

The Dutchmen answered with a pair of goals seconds apart in the second period.  Redshirt freshman Luke Cain (Thunder Bay, ON) scored 4:16 into the period on a rebound try off of a shot by sophomore center John Simpson (Boxborough, MA). Cook's initial shot bounced off Colgate goaltender Charles Long and Simpson took another crack at it. The puck rolled to the left and Cain swept it into the wide open net for his first goal of the season and third of his career.

Cook added another assist on the next goal at 5:02. The co-captain was the last to touch the puck before Milnamow ripped a shot over Longs shoulder. The goal was his first of the season and eighth of his career. Freshman center Kelly Zajac (Winnipeg, MAN), who scored his first career goal against RPI to help Union advance to the Championship game, picked up the second assist.

Colgate responded, however, at 8:44 with another power play goal. Brisebois cleaned up on a rebound in front and senior defenseman Nick St. Pierre and Riley had the helpers.

Colgate held a 28-26 shot advantage and went 2-8 on the power play as compared to Union's 0-7 mark.

Union opens its doors to Messa Rink for the home-opener on Friday, Oct. 31 for a 7 p.m. contest against Connecticut.
