Princeton Cruises to Exhibition Win
PRINCETON -- Sophomore defenseman Cam Ritchie had four assists
as the ninth-ranked Princeton men’s hockey team opened its
season with a 6-2 win over Western Ontario in an exhibition game on
Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
The Tigers got goals for six scorers, three of which were skating
in their first game wearing the Orange and Black. Freshman Brodie
Zuk got the scoring started 6:15 into the game when he scored on
the power play while the Tigers skated with a two-man advantage.
Ritchie and freshman Marc Hagel assisted on the goal, which was the
first of five power-play goals in the game between the two
teams.
The Tigers added to their lead 36 seconds into the second period
when freshman Derrick Pallis scored on a shot from the point that
was set up by Ritchie and junior Kevin Kaiser. Junior Kevin Crane
made it 3-0 when his point shot banged off the inside post and
wound up in the net following a face off. Ritchie also assisted on
the goal.
Princeton made it 4-0 when junior Tyler Beachell scored at 15:10
of the period. The goal came off the rush as junior Dan Bartlett
led sophomore Matt Arhontas into the zone. Arhontas couldn’t
get to the net and circled behind before laying the puck in the
crease, where Beachell hammered it in.
Western Ontario got the next two goals to close out the period.
Both goals came on the power play as Luc Martin and Aaron Snow
helped the Mustangs cut the Tiger lead in half.
Princeton then scored twice in the final frame to secure the 6-2
win. First Kaiser scored an unassisted tally at 13:58 and sophomore
Sam Sabky finished the scoring with his goal with eight seconds
left.
All three Tiger goaltenders played a period in the game. Senior
Thomas Sychterz made 14 saves in the first period to get the win.
Sophomore Alan Reynolds made four in the second period and junior
Zane Kalemba had nine in the third.
Princeton was 3 for 11 with the man advantage while the Mustangs
were 2 for 12. Two of Princeton’s goals came while the Tigers
skated with two extra skaters.
Princeton opens the season next Friday at Brown at 7:30 p.m.
