Freshmen Impress in Harvard's Win
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Freshmen accounted for all three goals
as the No. 20 Harvard men’s hockey team defeated
Québec-Trois-Rivières, 3-1, in an exhibition game
Friday night at Bright Hockey Center.
Rookies Alex Killorn, Ryan Grimshaw and Rence Coassin all scored
in their first competitive collegiate action, while two of their
classmates notched assists. The Crimson outshot the Patriotes,
43-21, but Jean-Christian Blanchard kept UQTR in contention with 40
saves.
The Crimson jumped on top with a pair of first-period goals in
rapid succession. The first came off the stick of Killorn on the
power play. He skated in from the left side to bury the rebound
after Blanchard stopped Jimmy Fraser’s stuff-in attempt from
the other post. Sophomore Matt McCollem also assisted on the
play.
Grimshaw doubled the lead just 72 seconds later, when his shot
from the right side found its way past Blanchard for the eventual
game-winner. Sophomore Joe Smith and freshman Eric Kroshus had
helpers on the play.
The only downside of the first period for the Crimson was that the
coaching staff did not get to see freshman goaltender Matt Hoyle
face much of a test in his first game action. Harvard outshot UQTR,
17-3, in the period and took the 2-0 lead to the first
intermission.
Harvard held a 13-10 edge in second-period shots, but the
Patriotes were able to get back in the game with a power-play tally
at 11:39. Jean-Sébastien Breton had the goal, getting to the
left post and banging the puck home after Mathieu Gravel sent it at
the net from the right side.
Coassin got the margin back to two goals with just over three
minutes remaining in the period, scoring his first goal in a
Harvard uniform with junior Chad Morin and freshman Daniel Moriarty
assisting.
Sophomore Ryan Carroll made a team-high nine saves in the period,
including seven stops on three UQTR power plays.
Neither team would score in a penalty-filled third period, as
Blanchard stopped 10 shots on six Crimson power plays and 13 total
shots in the period. John Riley made eight saves, including two
tough ones back-to-back on a Patriotes man advantage.
The Crimson officially opens the season Oct. 31, at home against
Dartmouth.
