Quinnipiac Turns Back Saints
CANTON, NY -- Senior defenseman Dan Henningson scored two goals and Chris Myers snapped a 2-2 tie late in the second period, sending Quinnipiac University on its way to a 5-2 ECAC Hockey win over St. Lawrence University in Canton Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats won their four straight, all on the road, and improves to 6-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the ECAC while the Saints dropped their fourth in a row and are 4-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league play.
"I thought we played two periods of pretty solid hockey," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "Quinnipiac is a very talented team and explosive offensively, and we made some mistakes later in the game that cost us."
The Saints opened the scoring midway through the first period as junior center Travis Vermeulen tipped home his third of the year from right in front as Alex Curran found him with a centering pass at 10:20. Quinnipiac came back to tie it after a faceoff win in the Saint end with defenseman Dan Henningson scoring his second of the year through a screen in front of Saint goalie Alex Petizian.
The Saints took a 2-1 lead at 11:28 of a wide-open second period as defenseman Matt Generous pinched in from the point and took a pass from senior center Brock McBride, tucking the puck past Bobcat goalie Nick Pisellini, but Quinnipiac came back with goals just 2:08 apart to take a 3-2 lead.
Henningson scored his second of the game with the Bobcats on a four-on-three power play and a Saint defender caught without a stick at 14:11 to tie it and Myers scored his second of the season at 16:19 to put Quinnipiac in front despite being outshot 15-9 by the Saints in the second period.
The Saints had several great chances on rebounds with Pisellini down, but either couldn't quite get to the puck or were tied up by the Quinnipiac defense.
The Bobcats increased their lead to 4-2 at 5:37 of the second on a five-on-three power play as David Marshall won the draw in the Saint end and Brandon Wong whipped a pass across the ice to Jean-Marc Beaudoin who one-timed a shot into the upper corner for his second of the season. Freshman Scott Zurevinski added an insurance goal with 2:05 to go in regulation.
Pisellini finished with 28 saves for Quinnipiac which went two-for-seven on the power play and killed off all five Saint power play chances. Petizian finished with 24 saves for the Saints.
"We need to regroup and have some solid practices this week. I think the effort is there, but we have a number of things to clean up and work on. We've got two real tough ones coming up on the road, but they are games we can use to try to get back on the right track," Marsh added.
