Harvard Rallies to Tie Colgate
HAMILTON, N.Y.-Daniel Moriarty and Alex Killorn scored to bring the No. 18 Harvard men's hockey team back from a two-goal deficit, and fellow freshman Matt Hoyle made a slew of tough saves down the stretch as the Crimson tied Colgate, 2-2, Saturday night at Starr Rink.
Hoyle finished with 28 saves and saved his best for last, after Killorn tied the game halfway through the third period with his second goal of the season. Hoyle started his late heroics by gloving a quick release from Tom Riley on the left following a cross-ice feed. He then made a pair of incredible saves, stopping a breakaway by Smith and knocking down the follow-up shot. He came up big again in the final minute of overtime, making a tough glove save on Ethan Cox.
Moriarty scored his first career goal for the Crimson (4-3-2, 4-3-2 ECAC Hockey) in the second period after the Raiders got two goals in 39 seconds in the first.
Charles Long made 30 saves for Colgate (4-4-2, 1-3-2), as Harvard held a 15-8 edge in shots in the third period and a 3-2 advantage in overtime.
The Crimson came out forechecking hard, and junior Doug Rogers had the first scoring chance, taking a Killorn drop pass and trying to stuff it past Long at the left post about four minutes into the game. The Colgate goalie stopped that bid and flurry from the line of Jimmy Fraser, Steve Rolecek and Michael Del Mauro on the next shift.
The Raiders took control with two quick goals. The first came from Austin Smith at 13:34. Hoyle made a nice right-pad stop on David McIntyre after a pass from Jason Fredricks, but Smith came in to roof the rebound from the left side.
Colgate struck again at 14:13, with Jason Williams netting the goal.
Harvard got excellent possession on a pair of first-period power plays but got only one of its man-advantage shots on net. A Harvard penalty cut short the second power play and the Crimson killed a short Colgate man advantage late in the period. The Raiders outshot Harvard, 12-9, in the opening frame.
Moriarty halved the lead barely four minutes into the second period. He won an offensive-zone faceoff from the right dot back to Brian McCafferty. The senior co-captain skated the puck down the right side and centered it for Moriarty to tip over the blocker of Long.
The Crimson looked to have tied immediately after killing a penalty. Rogers stepped on the ice and took a pass from Fraser. He skated up the left wing and passed across to senior Nick Coskren, whose shot was stopped by Long. Harvard got a poke at the loose puck, but video review confirmed that it never crossed the goal line.
Harvard killed two penalties in the final six minutes of the period. Colgate had two man-advantage shots and an 8-5 shots advantage for the period.
Following all the penalty killing, the Crimson nearly found the equalizer on a power play early in the third period. Harvard forced several saves by Long while on the man advantage. The final one came when he darted out his left skate to stop a one-timer by Rogers from the left faceoff circle.
Killorn tied the score at 10:12 of the final frame, skating across the zone, right to left, and beating long with a shot low to the glove side. Rogers and Coskren picked up assists on the play.
A Harvard power play followed soon after, and the Crimson nearly took the lead.
Senior Steve Rolecek's deflection into the net was ruled to have come above the crossbar, and the would-be goal was waved off for a high stick. Long then kept it tied with a big even-strength save, covering Rogers' tip of an Alex Biega stop.
The Crimson wraps up its four-game road swing Friday at defending national champion Boston College.
